X Premium (formerly Twitter Blue) offers features like editing posts, fewer ads, and monetization tools. Plans start at $3/month across three tiers.
If you spend a lot of time scrolling through X (formerly Twitter), you’ve probably seen more blue checkmarks on profiles or noticed ads promoting X Premium. This subscription service unlocks exclusive features, fewer ads, advanced tools for creators, and even new ways to make money on the platform.
In this guide, I’ll break down everything about X Premium, including its tiers (Basic, Premium, and Premium Plus), key features, pricing across regions, and how to buy or cancel a subscription. Whether you’re a casual user or building a serious audience, this will help you decide if X Premium is worth it.
X Premium, formerly known as Twitter Blue, launched in 2021 and has since expanded under Elon Musk’s leadership. It’s a paid membership designed to enhance your experience with tools like editing posts, longer uploads, and boosted visibility.
There are three subscription levels:
This shift reflects Musk’s goal of moving away from an ad-only model toward a more sustainable, subscription-based platform that rewards engaged users and creators while reducing spam.
X Premium offers monthly and yearly pricing options. Here’s a quick overview of US web pricing (as of now):
Tier | Monthly Cost | Yearly Cost | Quick Perks |
Basic | $3 | $32 | Edit posts, longer uploads, no checkmark |
Premium | $8 | $84 | Blue checkmark, fewer ads, revenue sharing |
Premium+ | $40 | $395 | Ad-free, reply boosts, Articles, extra AI tools |
Note: Pricing varies by region and platform. For example, in Canada, Basic is $3.75/month, Premium is $10/month, and Premium+ is $56/month. Subscribing on iOS or Android is usually more expensive (~$11/month for Premium) due to app store fees. For the full breakdown by country, check out the official table on X’s help site.
X Premium unlocks a variety of tools to improve your experience. Some are available across all tiers, while others are exclusive to higher levels.
Stepping up to Premium or higher? Here’s where it gets exciting:
If you’re all-in, Premium+ is the top shelf with these exclusives:
It’s for power users who want max visibility and minimal distractions.
Note: Not all X subscriptions’ features are available worldwide and on every platform.
It depends on how you use the platform:
If you’re planning to stay long-term, annual plans save money compared to monthly billing.
If ads annoy you and you need max visibility, Premium+ might be worth it. Otherwise, Premium hits the sweet spot.
Finally, it’s time to learn how to upgrade your X account. It’s easy, but there are a few hoops to jump through for security.
To subscribe, you’ll need:
That’s all, you’re subscribed! Features kick in right away, but the checkmark might take a review.
Done and enjoy the perks!
Pro tip: If you change your profile after subscribing, you might lose the checkmark temporarily until it’s re-verified.
Changed your mind? Switching is easy on iOS or the web. Android doesn’t support it directly, so you might need to cancel and resubscribe.
When you upgrade to X Premium or Premium Plus, you’ll receive a partial prorated refund for the remaining time on your old plan. Downgrading? Keep the current features till your billing cycle ends, then switch. However, you will usually get no refund.
In the app, go to Profile> Premium > Manage subscription, select the new tier, and confirm.
Upgrading applies your remaining credit to the new tier, so you pay the difference immediately and the new plan kicks in. On the other hand, downgrading occurs only after the cycle ends. You will be charged the updated rate to start the new plan.
From the side menu, hit Premium > Manage, choose the tier, and follow the prompts.
If you no longer need the paid subscription, you can cancel it from the X mobile app or web. However, no pausing is allowed. Once you cancel the plan, it takes effect at your billing cycle’s end. No refunds for paid time, though.
Go to where you subscribed:
If you cancel, the blue check remains until the end of your paid period, unless X pulls it for rule violations. I suggest doing it at least 24 hours before renewal to skip charges.
X Premium is designed to make the platform more engaging and rewarding. With features like editing posts, fewer ads, monetization, and AI-powered tools, it’s a good fit for creators and active users.
At just $3/month for Basic, it’s accessible, but the real benefits shine at Premium and beyond.
What about you? Are you ready to go Premium?
