WhatsApp to Let You Set Reminders for Messages: Here’s How It Works

WhatsApp is testing a new Message Reminders feature to help users reply on time, along with proactive nudges for unread messages. Here’s how it works.

Key Takeaways:

  • WhatsApp is adding a built-in Message Reminder feature, letting users set alerts for specific messages instead of relying on pins or stars.
  • To use it: Long-press a message, tap “Remind me,” and choose from presets (2h, 8h, 24h) or set a custom time. A bell icon will appear beside the message.
  • When the time’s up, you’ll get a WhatsApp notification showing the message, sender name, and media preview, tagged as “🔔Reminder.”
  • WhatsApp is also testing Proactive Nudges that remind you about unread messages from your most frequent contacts, which can be helpful for busy chats.
  • Still in beta: These features are being tested on Android with no confirmed iOS release date yet.

WhatsApp is finally working on a feature that almost every user has wanted for ages: Message Reminders. It’s the perfect tool for those who promise to reply to a message later, but completely forget about it moments afterward.

WhatsApp’s New Reminder Feature: Presets and Custom Timers

According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp users will soon be able to set reminders for specific messages instead of relying on pinned chats or starred messages. Once available, users can attach a real-time notification to a received message, nudging them at just the right time.

Here’s how Message Reminders will work:

  1. Long-press the message you want to be reminded of.
  2. Tap “Remind me.”
  3. Choose from preset timers: 2 hours, 8 hours, 24 hours, or set a custom time.

Once a reminder is attached, a small bell icon will appear next to the message, making it stand out in the chat thread.

When the reminder timer ends, you’ll receive a WhatsApp notification with a “🔔Reminder” tag, including the message content, chat name, and even a media preview (if applicable)—just like any regular alert.

WhatsApp Is Also Working on Proactive Nudges

In addition to Message Reminders, WhatsApp is also testing a proactive nudge feature. WhatsApp has been steadily rolling out user-focused features lately, including the new Questions feature for Channels on iOS, which encourages more interactive engagement.

Proactive Nudges are designed to occasionally notify you about unread messages from your most frequent contacts. The feature will be especially helpful when you’re juggling multiple conversations and might miss an important message.

When Will These Features Be Available?

As with all beta features, there’s no official launch date yet. The feature is currently being tested in the latest WhatsApp beta for Android, with no official word on an iOS release. We’ll keep an eye out and update you as soon as it becomes more widely available.
