How to Change iPhone Alarm Snooze Time in iOS 26 (and Earlier)

iOS 26 finally brings customizable snooze times to iPhone alarms. Here's how to set it up—and what to try if you're still using an older version.

Have you noticed that the iPhone’s built-in alarm snooze is stuck at 9 minutes? While that works for some, many users prefer a shorter or longer snooze duration. Good news—Apple finally listened. With iOS 26, you can now set a custom snooze time on your iPhone.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through why the default snooze is nine minutes, how to change it on iOS 26, and some smart workarounds if you’re still using an older version.

Why Is the iPhone Alarm Snooze Default Set to 9 Minutes?

The 9-minute snooze cycle is a nostalgic nod to the days of analog alarm clocks. Back in the day, the gear mechanisms couldn’t precisely align for a 10-minute delay—so manufacturers settled for nine. Over time, it became the norm.

Additionally, there is some psychology behind it. Ten minutes may allow someone to slip back into deep sleep, making it harder to wake up again. Nine minutes strikes a balance—it’s just long enough to feel restful, yet short enough to prevent a full REM cycle restart.

How to Change Alarm Snooze Time in iOS 26

For years, iPhone users were stuck with a one-size-fits-all 9-minute snooze. That changes in iOS 26. Apple now gives you the power to customize it your way.

What’s New:

  • Choose any snooze interval between 1 and 15 minutes.
  • Set different snooze times for different alarms.
  • Enjoy larger Snooze and Stop buttons—perfect when you’re half-asleep.

Steps to Change Alarm Snooze Time:

  1. Launch the Clock app and go to the Alarm tab. tap the plus icon to create a new alarm or select an existing alarm.
  2. Now, toggle on Snooze (for new alarms it’s on by default).
  3. Just below the Snooze toggle, tap the Snooze Duration option.
  4. Scroll and choose your preferred snooze time between 1 minute to 15 minutes.
  5. Tap the orange tick mark in the top right corner to save your choice.

You’re all set. Note that the default remains 9 minutes; change it if you prefer.

Extra Tips and Considerations

  • Wake Up alarms (Sleep Schedule) also support custom snooze times.
    • Go to ClockSleep/Wake UpChangeSnooze Duration.
  • You can customize the snooze duration per alarm, which is great for setting priorities (e.g., 5 minutes for a gym alarm and 10 minutes for a weekend nap).
  • If you’re on the iOS 26 beta, you can use this feature today. The public beta is scheduled to drop in July, with the official rollout expected in mid-September.

If you’re not comfortable installing the iOS 26 beta, don’t worry; I’ve found two effective ways to change the snooze time on your iPhone.

1. Change the iPhone snooze time using Multiple alarms

You may set up several alarms at specific intervals to shorten or extend the snooze time. To automatically increase your snooze time,

  1. Open the Clock app → Shift to the Alarm tab.
  2. Tap the plus icon → Set a warning alarm
If you prefer to wake up at 7 a.m., set the alarm for 6.50 a.m.
  3. Toggle off Snooze → Tap Save.

Go to alarms tap the plus icon set a time toggle off snooze tap save in clock
  4. Follow the same steps to set the next alarm for your waking time.
Here, the next alarm will be at 7 a.m.

Add as many alarms as you need to wake up at the proper time. To change the snooze time to a shorter period, set alarms at small intervals, like 5 minutes. So, your alarm will ring every 5 minutes.

If you wake up earlier than your desired snooze time, go to the clock app and manually disable the rest of the alarms to avoid irritation.

2. Use a third-party alarm app that customizes snooze time

If setting multiple alarms seems daunting, you may use third-party iPhone alarm apps. These apps offer customizable snooze time with other useful features.

I have used Alarmy here to explain how third-party alarm apps work:

  1. After downloading the app, open it.
  2. Set your alarm’s time, preferred sound, and mission.
  3. Once set, tap the alarm from the home page.
  4. Tap Snooze.
  5. Select the duration → Tap Done.

Get a fresh wakeup!

Apple’s new snooze customization in iOS 26 is a long-awaited upgrade that brings meaningful personalization to how you wake up. Whether you like a quick nudge or a few extra minutes, now you’re in control of your morning routine.
