Whether it’s a shout-out from a friend or user-generated content worth highlighting, sharing it again can help keep your followers engaged. But can you repost just any Story on Instagram? Not quite.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through all the ways to repost a Story on Instagram, whether you’re tagged or not, while respecting platform rules and privacy boundaries.

Can You Repost an Instagram Story?

Yes, you can, but only under certain conditions. Instagram lets users repost Stories when they’re tagged, but it has restrictions in place to protect user privacy.

When You Can Repost

You can repost a Story if:

• You were tagged in the Story.
• The Story is still active (within 24 hours of being posted).
• If the Story is from a private account, you must follow them to repost it.

When You Can’t Repost

Instagram does not allow you to repost a Story if:

• You are not tagged in it.
• The Story was shared from a private account you don’t follow.
• The Story is no longer available (expired or deleted).
• The user has disabled resharing in their Story settings.

How to Repost an Instagram Story When You’re Tagged

When someone tags you in their Instagram Story, you’ll receive a direct message notification in your inbox. Here’s how to repost it:

Method 1: From Direct Messages

1. First, open Instagram and head over to your DMs.
2. Find the chat from the person who tagged you, it’ll usually be right near the top.
3. Tap the ‘Add to Your Story’ button on the received message. 
4. Choose your audience and hit the Send button.
   

Method 2: From Mentions

1. Open Instagram and tap the little heart icon at the top right.
2. Under “Stories about you,” you’ll see any mentions. Tap Mentions to open them.
   
3. Find the one you want to reshare, then hit “Add to your Story.”
4. Pick who sees it, public, Close Friends, up to you. Then hit Send.
   

How to Repost a Story If You’re Not Tagged

If you weren’t tagged in a Story, Instagram doesn’t offer a built-in repost option. But here are a couple of ethical workarounds:

Option 1: Use a Screenshot or Screen Recording

1. Start by watching the Story you want to share.
2. If it’s a photo, take a quick screenshot.
3. If it’s a video, swipe down (or up) and use your phone’s screen recorder to capture it.
4. Now open the Photos app (or whatever you use to edit).
5. Clean it up, trim the start/end, crop out usernames if needed, or add your own caption.
6. Then just upload it: Open Instagram, post it to your Story, and if you want to give credit, tag the original creator. Totally optional, but it’s a nice gesture.

Option 2: Use a Third-Party App

There are various third-party apps, such as InSaver and Story Saver, available on the App Store that allow you to download someone’s Instagram Story, as long as the Story is not from a private account. I’ve used the InSaver app as an example.

1. Open the Story you’re trying to save.
2. Tap the Send icon (bottom right), then hit Copy Link.
   
3. Now open the InSaver app (or any repost app you like).
4. Paste the link into the textbox and tap Get Post. It’ll pull the Story for you.
5. Tap Share, and you’ll get the option to save it to your camera roll.
6. Head back to Instagram, upload it as your own Story.
7. If you want, tag or mention the original creator to give them a shoutout.
   

Note: Always ask for permission before reposting content, especially from private accounts or personal Stories.

How to Repost Your Own Stories from the Archive

Want to reshare one of your past Stories? Instagram makes it easy through the Archive.

1. Open Instagram and go to your profile.
2. Tap the three-line menu in the top right.
3. Hit Archive (it’s under “How you use Instagram”).
4. Make sure it says “Stories Archive” at the top, tap to switch if it doesn’t.
   
5. Scroll through and find the Story you want to bring back.
6. Tap it, then hit the Share icon.
7. Now you can tweak it. Add text, stickers, whatever and hit Send to repost it.
   

How to Share an Instagram Reel or Post to Your Story

You can also share Instagram Reels and Posts, either yours or someone else’s, directly to your Story, as long as the original content is from a public account.

1. Tap the paper plane icon under the Reel or post; that’s the Share button.
2. Then tap Add to Story.
3. From there, make any changes you want, stickers, text, resize the post, then hit Send to publish it.
