Meta Platforms is expanding Threads with a major desktop upgrade, bringing direct messaging support to the web version of the platform. The update adds both one-on-one and group chats to Threads on desktop, making it easier for users to continue conversations without switching back to their phones.
With this rollout, Threads now includes a dedicated Messages tab on the web, giving users access to their inbox, message requests, and new chat options directly from a desktop browser. The move brings Threads more in line with platforms like X and Bluesky, both of which already offer full desktop messaging experiences.
Threads messaging is now available on desktop
According to Threads head Connor Hayes, web-based messaging was one of the most requested features after direct messages first launched on Threads in 2025. The goal is straightforward: make conversations easier to manage across devices without interrupting the experience.
The desktop version now offers a complete inbox layout with message requests, conversation search, and the ability to start new chats directly from the web interface. Instead of feeling like a stripped-down browser version, Threads on desktop now mirrors much more of the mobile app experience.
The update also reflects how user behavior on Threads is evolving. Meta says people are sending significantly more messages on the platform compared to earlier this year, signaling a broader shift toward private and group conversations alongside public posts and replies.
At the same time, Threads has continued expanding its social features with additions like Live Chats. These event-focused conversation spaces allow users to join discussions in real time, share media, react to messages, and follow larger group interactions even without actively participating.
The arrival of desktop messaging, combined with newer features like Live Chats, shows that Threads is gradually positioning itself as more than just a text-based social feed. Private messaging and real-time interaction are becoming a much bigger part of the overall experience.
As Threads continues to grow, the platform is increasingly aligning itself with other major social apps that treat messaging as a core layer of engagement rather than an optional add-on.
