Threads is introducing a new Live Chats feature that focuses on real-time group conversations around live events.
The idea is straightforward. Instead of regular posts and replies, users can jump into public chats while something is happening, like a game or a music release and follow the discussion as it unfolds.
The focus here is on real-time interaction rather than delayed replies.
How Live Chats work on Threads
Live Chats are built to feel more active than typical group chats. A red ring around a profile shows when a chat is live, and features like polls, countdowns, and typing indicators keep the conversation moving.
For sports events, Threads is also adding live scores directly into chats, so the discussion stays in sync with what’s happening.
Users can find these chats at the top of a Community feed or through shared posts in their main feed. Once inside, they can send messages, react with emojis, and share media like photos, videos, or links. Even if a chat reaches its limit, users can still follow along, react, and vote in polls.
Another detail is that these chats remain visible even after they end, so users can go back and read through the conversation later.
Where it’s rolling out first
The feature is launching first within the NBA community on Threads, where Live Chats will be hosted during playoff games by creators and media personalities such as Malika Andrews and Rachel Nichols.
Threads says this is just the starting point. The plan is to expand Live Chats to more communities over time, while also adding features like co-hosting, real-time updates, lock screen widgets, and the ability to share chat messages back to the main feed.
