iPhone 17 Air Could Revive Apple’s Bumper Case

Apple may bring back an accessory it hasn’t sold in over a decade. According to Mark Gurman, the company has internally discussed introducing a bumper case for the upcoming iPhone 17 Air. The design would echo the iPhone 4’s case from 2010, wrapping around the edges while leaving the back fully exposed.

Why Apple Might Revisit the Bumper

The iPhone 17 Air is expected to stand out for its ultra-thin build, a trait that could make traditional cases feel counterintuitive. A bumper case would strike a middle ground, giving owners some level of protection against drops and scratches while preserving the slim profile Apple is reportedly prioritizing. The original bumper case wasn’t born out of design ambition but controversy. After iPhone 4 users reported reception issues when gripping the phone in certain ways, Apple began handing out free bumpers to mitigate the problem. While the iPhone 17 Air doesn’t appear to face a similar technical flaw, the rumored return of the bumper style may resonate with longtime users who remember that era.

Separate reporting from The Information’s Wayne Ma suggests Apple is also developing a battery case for the iPhone 17 Air. Apple hasn’t offered one since the iPhone 11, shifting instead to the MagSafe Battery Pack, which it discontinued in 2023. Given the thinner build and likely smaller battery capacity of the Air model, a battery case could provide a practical option for heavy users who need more longevity.
