WhatsApp Tests AI Image Editing for Status Updates on iOS

WhatsApp is currently testing some new AI-enhanced image editing tools specifically for status updates on iOS devices. As reported by WABetainfo, a select group of beta testers is gaining access to a revamped image editing interface when they go to prepare photo-based status updates.

The update brings in Meta AI-powered Imagine tools alongside the existing filters, allowing users to perform more sophisticated edits without having to exit the app.

New AI Styles for Photo Editing

A notable addition is a set of AI-generated visual styles that offer different artistic treatments of photos. Users can choose from styles like 3D, Comic Book, Anime, Classical, Clay, Felt, Kawaii, Painterly, and Video game-themed looks. These styles go beyond static filters by generating AI-based variations of the original images.

To refine the look, each style can be regenerated multiple times with a Redo option, which creates different AI interpretations without requiring the editing process to restart. This feature lets users tweak the final image to better align with their intended mood or artistic vision.

Content-Aware Editing and Object Removal

Beyond styles, this editor enables users to insert new elements, remove unwanted objects, and make other localized adjustments. If objects are removed, the AI automatically fills in the backgrounds to maintain a natural appearance. There’s also an option to use short text prompts to transform the scene or adjust the image’s overall mood.

Image Animation Adds Motion to Status Update

Another interesting addition is the ability to animate images, turning static photos into brief animated visuals intended to create more engaging status updates. These animations add a touch of motion while keeping the original context of the photos intact.

Availability

Currently, these AI-enhanced tools are available to a limited number of users who have the latest WhatsApp beta version for iOS. Some users with the stable version from the App Store might also see the feature pop up. The rollout is happening gradually across select regions as WhatsApp collects user feedback before a broader release.
