Tesla moves toward adding wireless CarPlay inside its interface, marking a major shift after years of resistance.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in his Power On newsletter, Tesla is expected to introduce Apple CarPlay support in the coming months. The report says Tesla will add the wireless version of CarPlay inside a dedicated window of its infotainment interface instead of replacing the full system.
This would be the biggest development for standard CarPlay in years. Tesla is the only major automaker that has continuously refused to adopt CarPlay despite high demand from customers. If the plan moves forward, it would mark a major shift for Tesla and for Elon Musk, who has repeatedly rejected the need for CarPlay in the past.
Tesla’s shift is surprising because the company has ignored one of the most requested features from buyers. CarPlay is offered in most modern cars and often influences purchase decisions, yet Tesla has always pushed its own interface as superior. Gurman calls the possible change a “stunning reversal.” The report notes that Musk could still change plans at any time, but Tesla appears to be preparing for a rollout.
Gurman says Tesla will not adopt the more advanced CarPlay Ultra system that takes over the entire display. Instead, regular wireless CarPlay will appear inside a section of the screen while Tesla’s native interface remains active. Navigation, vehicle controls, entertainment features, and other software will continue to function as usual.
Tesla already supports Apple Music and Apple Podcasts through its own apps. Adding CarPlay will allow drivers to access apps like Maps, Messages, and other third party apps without relying on the phone screen.
If Tesla goes ahead with this update, iPhone users who depend on CarPlay will find Tesla vehicles more appealing. Many drivers avoid cars without CarPlay because they want consistent access to their apps, navigation, and messaging in any vehicle they drive.
Even though Tesla’s user interface is well regarded, CarPlay fills important gaps such as:
• Messaging with Siri
• Using preferred apps like Overcast or WhatsApp
• Keeping the same in car experience across multiple vehicles
The goal is not to replace Tesla’s infotainment system but to offer an additional option for drivers who want it.
If Tesla does not pause or cancel plans, CarPlay support could arrive soon. For people who were waiting for this feature before purchasing a Tesla, the wait might finally be over.
