Fresh Details Point to a More Flexible Future for the iPhone Air

Apple’s roadmap for the successor to the iPhone Air is coming into sharper focus as recent reports shed light on what the device is set to offer and where it fits in the company’s longer-term strategies. Insights from The Information and Bloomberg indicate that the Air series is evolving into one of Apple’s most adaptable and ambitious iPhone projects.

Conflicting Reports About Delays

Earlier, The Information noted that Apple’s follow-up to the iPhone Air had been pushed back following slower than anticipated sales of the initial model, along with Apple’s interest in including a second rear camera. However, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman tells a contrasting story, stating that the device has been absent from Apple’s 2024 schedule for some time. This suggests that Apple may have never intended for the Air to receive yearly updates.

A Second Rear Camera Appears Unlikely

Gurman claims that the existing camera configuration is already too crowded to incorporate an additional lens without substantial redesign. Since the extra lens would likely be the least utilized across the iPhone lineup, the engineering effort seems misaligned with the Air’s relatively niche audience. A dual camera setup might only materialize if the design from Apple’s future foldable iPhones becomes widely adopted.

The Shift to a 2 Nanometer A20 Chip

The most significant change anticipated with the next iPhone Air is its internal shift. Gurman highlights that Apple’s focus is on migrating to a new 2 nanometer chip. This A20 processor, set to leverage TSMC’s N2 manufacturing method, promises noticeable gains in efficiency and battery life. For Apple, this silicon transition appears to be the keystone of the product’s development.

Modest Sales Expectations for the Air

Reports indicate that Apple internal assessments expect the iPhone Air to make up roughly six to eight percent of new iPhone sales. This mirrors the sales trajectory of the iPhone 16 Plus, positioning the Air as a selectively targeted device rather than a mainstream bestseller.

A New Release Schedule for 2026 and Beyond

Gurman presents a picture of Apple’s future iPhone release structure. By fall 2026, the company aims to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and its first foldable iPhone. Roughly six months later, Apple is likely to launch additional models, creating a cycle that could result in up to six new iPhones each year.

A Testing Ground for Apple’s Foldable Future

Beyond commercial strategy, the Air series serves an important internal purpose. Gurman suggests Apple uses the Air as a testing platform for materials, compact component designs, battery improvements, and software technologies that will be critical for the foldable iPhone.
