Apple has kicked off iPhone 17 trial production in India, signaling a major shift toward dual-country manufacturing ahead of the September launch.
The launch of Apple’s much-awaited iPhone 17 lineup is just around the corner, as trial production has officially begun in India. This move marks a major step in Apple’s ongoing effort to reduce reliance on China and expand its global manufacturing footprint.
Foxconn, Apple’s primary manufacturer, has begun importing crucial iPhone 17 components—including display panels, camera modules, metal enclosures, and cover glass—from China to India, as reported by The Economic Times.
According to customs records, these imports made up around 10% of Foxconn’s total shipments from China in June. This indicates that the early stages of the production ramp-up are underway at the Indian manufacturing plant.
The full-scale production of the iPhone 17 lineup is set to begin in August 2025, just in time for Apple’s typical fall release. If the timeline holds, which is likely, we could see the iPhone 17 series launch in early September.
This marks the first time Apple is manufacturing iPhones in both China and India simultaneously, signaling a significant shift in its global manufacturing strategy. Previously, production in India lagged several weeks behind China, as seen with the iPhone 14 series.
Despite the progress, Foxconn’s Indian facilities are reportedly facing minor challenges. Reports suggest that over 300 Chinese engineers have left the Indian manufacturing plant, creating an expertise gap, as these engineers possessed the skills to maintain Apple’s manufacturing standards. However, officials from India’s IT Ministry have downplayed any disruption, reaffirming that Apple’s production plans remain on track.
If all goes well, we could see Apple introducing the iPhone 17 series during the week of September 8, 2025, similar to previous iPhone launch events. The full lineup will likely include:
Each model is expected to feature upgrades in performance, design, and Apple Intelligence features.
With trial production of the iPhone 17 already underway in India and mass manufacturing set to begin in August, Apple is entering a new phase of its global supply chain strategy, with India playing a more central role. The iPhone 17 lineup won’t just showcase Apple’s latest innovation in technology; it will also stand as a symbol of its evolving global manufacturing vision.
