A new leak shows how the iPhone 17 Air’s 6.6-inch display compares to the 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max, breaking Apple’s usual size pattern ahead of its expected September launch.
Apple’s iPhone 17 lineup is expected to debut in September, with industry chatter pointing to September 9 as the likely reveal date. Apple hasn’t shown the device or confirmed specifications, but a steady stream of leaks is painting a clearer picture of its design changes.
The biggest shake-up could be the introduction of the iPhone 17 Air—a thinner, lighter replacement for the Plus model—that redefines Apple’s traditional screen size tiers.
Tipster Majin Bu posted an image on X showing four screen protectors lined up for what he claims are the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Air, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. The side-by-side comparison offers a straightforward look at where the Air fits into the range.
If accurate, the Air would sit between the Pro and Pro Max, with a display large enough to stand out but without matching Apple’s largest option.
The leak suggests the iPhone 17 Air will use a 6.6-inch OLED display—smaller than the 6.7-inch Plus it replaces but still larger than the Pro’s expected 6.3 inches. This marks a rare departure from Apple’s long-running approach of giving the Plus and Pro Max the same screen size.
At the top end, the iPhone 17 Pro Max is rumored to expand to 6.9 inches, while the standard iPhone 17 may stay at 6.1 inches or increase slightly to 6.3. That means Apple’s new lineup could have four distinct screen sizes for the first time in years.
Rumored iPhone 17 Display Sizes
This reshuffle makes the Air a middle-ground option—more screen real estate than the Pro but without the Pro Max’s extra bulk.
Looking Ahead: Possible Foldable iPhone
Beyond the iPhone 17, rumors persist of a foldable iPhone planned for 2026. That device is said to feature a 7.58-inch inner display, potentially making it the largest iPhone screen to date, though foldables bring their own durability and cost considerations.
Apple’s September event should confirm whether the Air’s size shift is real, along with any other design changes. For now, the leaks suggest Apple is experimenting with breaking patterns it has kept for over a decade.
