Instagram is rolling out Google Cast support for Reels, allowing users to stream videos from the mobile app directly to compatible TVs. The feature works with Chromecast devices, TVs with Google Cast built in, and devices running Google TV or Android TV. On Google TV and Android TV, no additional app installation or device pairing is required.

The rollout is currently underway, although availability appears to be limited to select accounts for now.

    How it works

A new Cast button is beginning to appear in the top-right corner of the Instagram app.

Once tapped, users can send Reels from their smartphone to Chromecast devices, Google Cast-enabled TVs, and devices running Google TV or Android TV.

Meta says the feature also supports videos stored in the Saved tab, allowing users to cast previously bookmarked Reels without leaving the Instagram app.

Google TV and Android TV users will not need to install another application, as Instagram’s dedicated TV app has already been available on those platforms for several months.

Although the rollout has started, the feature does not appear to be available to everyone yet, suggesting Meta is enabling access gradually.

More TV features are on the way

The addition of Google Cast support follows Instagram’s recent expansion to Samsung smart TVs, further extending the platform’s presence in the living room.

Instagram is also reportedly testing a dedicated section for horizontal videos. Unlike Reels, which are designed primarily for vertical viewing, the new section would focus on landscape content better suited for television screens.

Meta has not announced when that feature will become available, but it highlights the company’s broader efforts to expand Instagram beyond smartphones.

Together, these updates suggest Instagram is becoming increasingly focused on larger-screen experiences, whether users are watching content alone or sharing videos with friends and family on a TV.

As more social media platforms compete for attention across multiple devices, bringing Reels to televisions could help Instagram keep users engaged beyond the mobile app.
