How to Sync iPhone to Computer

In the iCloud era, many users still prefer to have their iPhone data locally. By doing so you can ensure that the same data is accessible on your phone and PC. There is a couple of ways to sync your iPhone to the computer. One is using a cable and another is using Wi-Fi. The process remains the same for Windows and Mac running macOS Mojave or earlier. Before jumping to the steps, let’s first understand what can be synced?

What can you Sync to iTunes? 

You can sync the following types of content between your iPhone and computer:

  • Media such as songs, playlists, albums, movies, TV shows, podcasts, and audiobooks
  • Photos and videos
  • Your Calendars
  • Your Contacts

How to Sync iPhone to iTunes on Computer using Cable

Make sure you have updated iTunes installed on your computer.

  1. Open iTunes on your computer
  2. Connect your iPhone to your computer using a USB cable
  3. On your iPhone screen appear “Trust this Computer?” Tap on Trust.
  4. In iTunes, click on the small iPhone icon near the top-left of the window.

  5. In the left-side menu, you can choose what types of content you want to sync. For instance, you can select Music and tick the checkbox next to Sync Music.

  6. If you don’t want to sync your music, leave the checkbox unticked
  7. At the bottom of the window, click Apply.

  8. Finally, click Sync.

Similarly, you can repeat the process for Movies, TV Shows, and Photos from the left-side menu.

How to Sync iPhone to iTunes over WiFi

Turn on Wi-Fi Sync

  1. Open iTunes on your computer
  2. Connect your iPhone to your computer using a USB cable
  3. On your iPhone screen appear “Trust this Computer?”. Tap on Trust.
  4. In iTunes, click on the small iPhone icon near the top-left of the window.

  5. In the Options section, click the checkbox next to Sync with this iPhone over WiFi.
  6. At the bottom of the window, click Apply then Done.

Now, eject your iPhone by clicking on the up arrow beside the device icon in iTunes.

Unplug your iPhone from the computer.

Sync your iPhone over Wi-Fi

  1. Make sure that your computer and iPhone are connected to the same WiFi network.
  2. Connect your iPhone to a charger and plug into a power outlet, Syncing begins automatically.
  3. In the iTunes app, click the device icon and the Sync button

That’s it!

If your iPhone running iOS 12, you can manually sync. Go to Settings General → iTunes WiFi Sync → Tap the Sync Now button.

You will be able to see the progress of the sync, and a notification will appear once the process is completed.

Use Third-Party Software to Sync iPhone with Computer

If you do not want to use iTunes to sync your iPhone with your computer, there are several third-party options. A lot of these offer further customization and enable you to sync more types of files such as Bookmarks, Reminders, and Messages. Some popular ones include SynciosiMazing, and TunesGo.
