Throughout Chapter 7 Season 3, sprites have made Fortnite even more engaging by adding a unique gameplay twist to its unranked modes. Courtesy of weekly sprite additions, this engagement has regularly peaked at the time of a new update, the latest of which added gem sprites to the mix.
Sprite variants in Fortnite have aided players in combining two different gameplay bonuses into a single sprite. With the release of gem sprites, the number of these variants has also increased to eight. As of now, the current lineup of sprite variants includes base, gold, gummy, galaxy, gem, holofoil, cube, and quack.
What does a gem sprite do in Fortnite?
When you equip a gem sprite, it offers you a 30% reduction in fall damage. It’s worth paying attention here that even though the fall damage goes down with this sprite, it doesn’t make you invincible to being knocked out after a big fall, especially if you were already low on health.
Courtesy of the boost it provides, the gem sprite variant is quite useful for traversal in Fortnite. In particular, the Gem Aura Sprite is a great pick for those who want to scour the map with as much ease of traversal as equipping a sprite could offer. That’s because, combined with the Aura Sprite, it also gives you Shock Rock charge when you deal sufficient damage to your opponents, unlocking maneuvers such as double jumps.
Where to find gem sprites in Fortnite
To be able to find rare sprites such as the gem variants quicker, it’s highly beneficial to extract and equip a holofoil variant sprite first. The latter boosts your chances of finding rare sprites by 5% during a Fortnite match, cutting short the amount of effort you have to put in. Below, you can find the marked locations where Fortnite streamers and creators have previously found gem sprites.
Island between Chopped Shop and The Battlewoods
In the north-west of the Battle Royale map, sandwiched between Chopped Shop and The Battlewoods, there is a leaf-shaped island with a few red cliffs. Once you are there, go to the top of the highest cliff where you can find a special chest adjacent to the red shack. Opening this particular one has rewarded a player with a gem sprite before.
Extraction site between Zero Point and Sinister Strip
Right above Sinister Strip on the map, close to the Zero Point, there is an extraction site where you need to go. There, you will find a standard chest that is known to have spawned a gem sprite in the past.
Frosted Flats
Frosted Flats has turned out to be one of the more common sources of gem sprites in Fortnite. There are at least a few different locations from which players have obtained these sprites to add to their collection.
First off, head to the north-west direction from Frosted Flats. About a five-second sprint away from the bridge, there is a tree adjacent to a rock where you will find a chest that can provide a gem sprite.
To proceed with the second location, go to the ‘frosted’ part of Frosted Flats, the spot with the snow-capped buildings and hills. There, inside a small brick-and-mortar structure, there are a couple of chests, one of which has previously spawned the sought-after gem sprite.
Other ways to get gem sprites in Fortnite
Indexing it from a friend
If you are struggling to get your hands on a gem sprite the traditional way, you can simply recruit a friendly player who already has it to share the sprite with you. For this, you can go to the official Fortnite Discord and visit the “sprite-runners-network” channel. Once you find someone willing to help, enter a Fortnite match together with him. Let him drop the desired sprite for you to extract.
Then, partake in another match with him and return the sprite to the original owner. While doing this removes the sprite from your collection, since it has already been indexed, you can recall it at any time from the Sprites tab using a certain amount of Sprite Dust.
Taking it from an opponent
You don’t really have to go on a chest-hunting spree or ask for help to add gem sprites to your inventory. To be more precise, you also have the option to snatch it from another player during a match.
For this approach to work, it is advisable to go through which sprite each opponent has equipped on their back while you are still on the Spawn Island. Memorize the appearance of the opponent who has your desired sprite and then exit the Battle Bus at the same time as him. Once on the ground, chase after and eliminate him to claim the desired sprite from the dropped loot.
Rounding up
The introduction of gem sprites has added another layer of variety to what’s already available in Fortnite. In doing so, the devs also increased the sprite count in the game to 117. Importantly, this was also the last wave of sprites to be added in Chapter 7 Season 3.
While sprites are confirmed to continue into the gaming-themed Fortnite Override, those sprites will actually be a completely fresh set. On the other hand, Fortnite Runners’ sprites will be moved to the Sprite Garden island and won’t be available for use in Battle Royale matches. Regardless, the forthcoming seasonal update promises even more in this gameplay aspect, as Epic Games doubles down on its experience with sprites from this season and applies it to the next one.
