Fortnite Arenas, a new ranked mode in Fortnite, recently rolled out to all players on April 9. Despite having a similar sounding name, this mode is actually quite different from the original Arena mode, which was phased out in favor of a new Ranked mode as part of a major overhaul in 2023.
Arenas mode, aka Arenas Boxfights, is a fast-paced Fortnite mode focused on close-range combat, unlike the old Arena mode which offered a battle royale experience. Arenas Boxfights also involves a much smaller pool of players compared to Arena, with a 16-player lobby instead of a 100-player one. Since the new mode comes with its own set of rules and everything, here is a comprehensive explainer for the Fortnite enthusiasts who want to quickly get up to speed.
Fortnite Arenas Boxfights rules
In Fortnite Arenas, you can either play solo against 15 other players online or play duo against 7 other teams in the lobby. During a match, which takes place on a small map, you’ll go through consecutive rounds of 1v1 or 2v2 action (depending on whether you play solo or duo) winning which will give you points (one point per round won).
In this multiplayer mode, all players start with full health, shield, and identical weapons loadout. Importantly, a single round lasts for 40 seconds and is followed by overtime. During overtime, players receive storm damage and can not use the build option. However, the existing structures can still be edited by any player.
Due to the nature of the rounds in Arenas Boxfights, you can finish one round and be queued for the next one right away. As a consequence, the goal becomes to win rounds and score points as fast as possible until you get to the desired number of points, which is 20 points for solo and 15 points for duo, for victory.
The following rules are the fundamentals behind Fortnite’s Arenas Boxfights mode:
- 1v1 rounds among 16 players in Solo mode. Or, 2v2 rounds among 8 teams in Duo mode.
- Each round win earns you one point.
- The first player or team to reach 20 points in solo or 15 points in duo wins the match.
Apart from playing this mode competitively, you may also play an unranked solo match of Arenas Boxfights with anyone in the Showdown Leaderboards. For this, you just have to send the desired Fortnite player a “1v1 Me” invite, add him to your party, and then challenge him to a match. In this unranked version of Arenas mode, you only have to win 7 rounds in order to be declared the winner.
Divisions in Fortnite Arenas
Just like in any other ranked mode in Fortnite, the more matches you play in Arenas Boxfights, the more progression points you earn. Based on these points, you climb up the ranks, starting from Bronze all the way up to Unreal. As usual, pulling off better performances leads to more progression points for the player. On the flipside, performing poorly in consistent matches can get you demoted to a lower division.
To successfully upgrade your rank, you have to advance through its multiple divisions. For instance, to clear the Bronze rank/tier, you have to progress through Bronze I, Bronze II and Bronze III divisions. From Bronze to Diamond, each rank has three divisions, whereas Elite, Champion, and Unreal ranks have no divisions.
Quest rewards in Fortnite Arenas
The arrival of a new mode in Fortnite has also brought new rewards for players to grab. These additions are the Cracked Blueprint Spray and the Builder’s Crest Back Bling, which can be unlocked by winning 125 rounds and 300 rounds, respectively. It’s worth paying attention that the unlock requirement here talks about rounds and not entire Arenas matches.
Completing other ranked quests in Arenas offers the player bonus XP, which can boost their progress towards the next division. These quests include activities such as playing a certain number of rounds, winning three rounds on the bounce, bagging a certain number of eliminations or assists in a single match, and more.
