Spotify is finally adding lossless audio—but it may come with a catch. A new “Music Pro” tier could bring hi-fi sound, remix tools, and more at an extra cost.
Three years after teasing it, Spotify is finally preparing to roll out lossless audio—and it could arrive through a brand-new subscription tier called Music Pro. While Apple Music users have been enjoying high-fidelity sound at no additional cost, Spotify fans may need to shell out a little extra.
New evidence uncovered in Spotify’s desktop app, web player, and most recently, its iPhone beta app—points toward the imminent launch of a lossless streaming feature.
These code references suggest Spotify will soon introduce a tier offering “the best sound quality on Spotify: for music in up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz.”
Tech insiders Chris Messina (via TechCrunch), Spicetify (via The Verge), and Aaron Perris (via MacRumors) all independently confirmed the presence of the lossless audio feature buried in Spotify’s code.
According to a report from Bloomberg’s Lucas Shaw earlier this year, the upcoming Music Pro tier could offer more than just lossless audio. Expected features include:
This new tier may cost $5.99 per month in addition to a regular Spotify Premium subscription.
Spotify first announced its Hi-Fi tier in 2021, promising audiophile-level sound. But while Apple Music launched its own lossless and hi-res audio offerings later that same year—for free—Spotify’s version quietly disappeared from the spotlight.
Now, with Apple Music raising the bar and YouTube Music also gaining momentum, Spotify is under pressure to finally deliver. But with a rumored surcharge, some users are questioning whether it’s worth the price.
There’s still no official release date, but the presence of feature-specific code across multiple platforms—especially the iPhone beta app—strongly hints at a 2025 rollout. This aligns with Bloomberg’s earlier report.
