Threads Introduces Ghost Posts That Disappear After 24 Hours
Discover Threads’ new ghost posts: ephemeral, 24-hour disappearing posts for spontaneous thoughts and private reactions in a friendly, accessible way.

- Introduction of Ghost Posts: Threads now allows users to share temporary thoughts called ghost posts, which disappear from the timeline after 24 hours to promote spontaneous sharing without permanence.
- Auto-Archiving of Ghost Posts: Ghost posts automatically move to an archive after 24 hours, accessible only by the author, enabling quick, unfiltered sharing without long-term visibility.
- Private Replies and Likes: Replies to ghost posts are sent as private messages to the author, and likes are also visible only to the post creator, blending public sharing with private feedback.
- How to Create a Ghost Post: To create a ghost post, tap the ghost icon before publishing; it appears with a dotted speech bubble and is ideal for testing ideas or sharing thoughts without long-term visibility.
- Part of Broader Threads Update: Ghost posts are part of Meta’s efforts to make Threads more expressive, alongside new features like longer text posts and spoiler hiding tools, accommodating diverse conversation types.
Threads is introducing a new way to share temporary thoughts without worrying about them staying on your profile forever. The platform has officially launched ghost posts, a new type of post that disappears from the timeline after 24 hours.
Threads Introduces Ghost Posts That Auto-Archive After 24 Hours
As announced by Meta in an official blog post, ghost posts are automatically archived a day after publishing. The idea is simple, let users share quick, unfiltered thoughts without the pressure of permanence. Meta says it wants people to feel free to post spontaneous opinions and real-time reactions without overthinking how long they’ll stay visible.
When a ghost post expires, it doesn’t vanish completely, it’s simply archived, so only the author can access it later.
Replies Turn Into Private Messages
Unlike regular posts, ghost posts work a bit differently when it comes to interaction. If someone replies to your ghost post, their response goes straight to your Threads inbox as a direct message. Only you can see it. The same applies to likes, only the author can view who liked the post.
This unique design blends public sharing with private feedback, and it could also help drive more activity to Threads’ new standalone inbox, which hasn’t seen much traction since launch.
How to Create a Ghost Post on Threads
Creating a ghost post is simple. When composing a new post, tap or toggle the ghost icon before publishing. Once posted, it will appear on the timeline with a dotted speech bubble style, slightly faded to help differentiate it from normal posts.
The feature is ideal for testing ideas, sharing personal thoughts, or starting low-pressure conversations that don’t need to live on your profile forever.
Part of a Bigger Threads Update
Meta noted that ghost posts are part of its continued effort to make Threads more expressive. Over the past few months, the app has also added text attachments (allowing posts up to 10,000 characters) and tools to hide media or text containing spoilers. These updates show that Meta wants Threads to be a more flexible place for every kind of conversation, from quick thoughts to long discussions.
