Fortnitemares is back, bringing the spooky season with a bunch of exciting crossovers, new game modes, weapons, and more! However, one exciting addition this time around is the Skeleton Key. What does it do? It’s a special Nightmare Neighbourhood item that can be used to unlock Secret Rooms, which pack some seriously game-changing loot. So, if you’re wondering how to get your hands on one and make the most of it, here’s everything you need to know about the Skeleton Key in Fortnite.
Here’s how to find the Skeleton Key in Fortnite
In order to find the Skeleton Key in Fortnite, head over to Nightmare Neighbourhood and make your way to the graveyard. You will come across three different mausoleums here, but only two of them can contain a chest.
Once you enter a mausoleum, equip your pickaxe and dig in front of the tombstone to reveal a hidden chest. Open it, and there’s a chance you’ll find the Skeleton Key inside. Keep in mind that only two Skeleton Keys can spawn in a typical round.
The Skeleton Key cannot be found anywhere else on the island. So, if you’re looking to find one, the graveyard in Nightmare Neighbourhood is the place to go.
Here’s how to use the Skeleton Key in Fortnite
Once you’ve found the Skeleton Key, head to the mansion located just outside the graveyard. Before entering, make sure you have Visualised Sound enabled in your settings, as this is going to come in handy.
Enter the mansion, and from the ground floor, open the door to the first room. Make your way down the stairs until you reach an area with three different doors. You can use the Skeleton Key to unlock any of these rooms, with each one containing a random selection of loot.
There isn’t a specific door that’s better than the others, as the loot is randomised in every match. However, having Visualised Sound enables you to make the right call. Stand outside each room and listen for the audio hints, which can give you an idea of whether or not the room contains a chest before you use your Skeleton Key.
Rounding up
The Skeleton Key is a special item in Fortnite that allows players to unlock secret doors inside the mansion at the Nightmare Neighbourhood POI. You can find it in the area’s graveyard, where it can give you access to rooms filled with loot. Alongside the FNAF and Obsession crossover, the Skeleton Key is one of the many unique additions of Fortnitemares 2026.
