Instagram’s New Tool Offers Users the Chance to Shape Their Feeds

Instagram is testing new custom feed controls for Reels, giving users more power to personalize what they see.

Key Takeaways:

  • Instagram tests feed personalization controls: Select users can now adjust algorithm settings to fine-tune what appears in their Reels feed, with plans to expand to Explore.
  • User-driven content preferences: You can pick topics to see more or less of, letting Instagram’s algorithm learn and adapt to your actual interests.
  • Goal behind the update: Instagram wants users to shape their own experience, building on existing content sensitivity and parental control tools.
  • Expansion to Threads possible: The test begins with Reels but may later roll out to Explore and Meta’s Threads app for broader personalization.
  • No confirmed release date: Adam Mosseri says the feature is still in testing, and Instagram hasn’t shared when it will reach all users.

Instagram is rolling out a new feature aimed at giving users more say in their feeds, starting with Reels and soon extending to Explore. The social media platform, part of the Meta family, is testing a personalization tool that allows selected users to tweak their algorithm settings.

Tailor What Appears in Your Feed

Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, took to Threads to unveil the new feature, describing it as a method for users to “tune your algorithm” on Instagram by adjusting topics based on their interests. In a shared screenshot, users can be seen picking topics they’d like to see more or less of, making way for a feed that’s more in line with their personal preferences.

Mosseri pointed out that this tool aims to enhance user control over their feed, allowing them to shape their Instagram experience according to their tastes. This move is in line with previous updates that let users manage sensitive content, hide select recommendations, and broaden parental oversight.

Expansion Plans and Threads Connection

The current test of this feature is limited to a chosen group of users. Mosseri noted that while it starts with Reels, it will soon branch out to Explore. There are also plans to implement a similar function on the Threads app, drawing inspiration from a trend where users share witty remarks aimed at “the algorithm” to engage with like-minded individuals.
