Google is working on a new wardrobe planning feature for Google Photos that turns your existing photo library into a digital wardrobe, using AI to identify and organize clothing items automatically.
Instead of requiring users to upload or manually organize outfits, the system builds a wardrobe automatically from existing photos. These items are then grouped into a dedicated Wardrobe section inside the Collections tab.
The goal is to make outfit planning easier using content that already exists in your gallery.
How the AI wardrobe feature works
Once clothing items are detected, they are sorted into categories such as tops, bottoms, and other apparel. This makes it easier to browse specific types of clothing without going through the entire photo library.
From there, users can mix and match different pieces to see what works together. Any outfit they put together can be saved, grouped with others, or shared if they want. Instead of just scrolling through photos, it gives those images a bit more purpose, since they’re actually being used to plan something.
Google is also building a virtual try-on element into this. The idea is to show how selected items might look together on a digital avatar, giving a basic preview before you try anything in real life. It’s not meant to be perfectly accurate, but more of a quick way to get a sense of how an outfit comes together.
The concept itself isn’t entirely new. It’s very similar to what was shown in the 1995 comedy Clueless, where outfits could be mixed and matched on a screen before wearing them. The difference here is that everything is pulled automatically from your existing photos, so there’s no need to build a wardrobe manually inside the app.
Rollout details
Google says the wardrobe feature will begin rolling out later this summer. It will arrive on Android first, with iOS support expected to follow. Availability may vary initially as the feature is introduced in phases.
