Apple Is Testing an AI Support Assistant: Can It Really Replace a Human?

Apple is testing a new AI-based Support Assistant in its app that could reshape customer support with faster, smarter responses—before you ever talk to a human.

Apple seems to be working on a major upgrade to its Apple Support app—one that leverages generative AI to provide smarter, faster customer support. Discovered by MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris, the new feature, dubbed Support Assistant, is not live yet but has been referenced in internal code.

What Is Apple’s Support Assistant?

Support Assistant will act as the first point of contact when users reach out for help via the Apple Support app. Instead of directly speaking to a human, users will enter their queries into a chat interface and receive AI-generated responses. If the AI response doesn’t solve the issue, users can still escalate to a live Apple advisor.

Key Features of Support Assistant

The code reveals several intriguing capabilities for this upcoming feature:

  • AI-Powered Support: Support Assistant will use generative AI models to help users troubleshoot and resolve issues related to certain Apple products and services.
  • File Uploads: Users may be able to upload images, documents, or PDFs to provide context and assist the AI in diagnosing the problem.
  • Third-Party Collaboration: Apple indicates it’s working with partners to deliver this feature. While not confirmed, this hints at a possible collaboration with ChatGPT or similar large language models.

Transparency and Limitations

Apple is approaching this technology carefully. A disclaimer in the code warns that the AI may sometimes provide “incorrect, misleading, incomplete, offensive, or harmful outputs.” It also reminds users not to treat the AI’s responses as professional advice.

By being transparent about the AI’s limitations and continuing to offer access to human support, Apple aims to strike a healthy balance between automation and reliability.

Internal Testing Already in Motion

Although there’s no official release date yet, internal testing is underway. Codenamed “Ask,” the AI-based assistant is currently being used by AppleCare advisors to help craft responses using Apple’s internal knowledge base.

The Future of Apple Support

At WWDC 2025, Apple made it clear that artificial intelligence is now a top priority. The development of Support Assistant reinforces that message. If implemented well, this feature could be a game-changer for users seeking quick solutions to common tech problems, without waiting for a human on the other end.

As generative AI tools become smarter and more user-friendly, Apple’s move into AI-powered support could redefine how users interact with tech support.
