Instagram is testing new custom feed controls for Reels, giving users more power to personalize what they see.
Instagram is rolling out a new feature aimed at giving users more say in their feeds, starting with Reels and soon extending to Explore. The social media platform, part of the Meta family, is testing a personalization tool that allows selected users to tweak their algorithm settings.
Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, took to Threads to unveil the new feature, describing it as a method for users to “tune your algorithm” on Instagram by adjusting topics based on their interests. In a shared screenshot, users can be seen picking topics they’d like to see more or less of, making way for a feed that’s more in line with their personal preferences.
Mosseri pointed out that this tool aims to enhance user control over their feed, allowing them to shape their Instagram experience according to their tastes. This move is in line with previous updates that let users manage sensitive content, hide select recommendations, and broaden parental oversight.
The current test of this feature is limited to a chosen group of users. Mosseri noted that while it starts with Reels, it will soon branch out to Explore. There are also plans to implement a similar function on the Threads app, drawing inspiration from a trend where users share witty remarks aimed at “the algorithm” to engage with like-minded individuals.
As it stands, Mosseri has not disclosed which users will partake in the test or when this feature might roll out broadly. Would this increase your engagement with the platform? Share your thoughts below.
