Phone straps seem to be making a notable comeback, and leading the charge are two giants — Google and Apple. Just weeks after Apple introduced its $59 Crossbody Strap in conjunction with the iPhone 17 launch, Google has stepped into the fray with a significantly cheaper alternative — the Rope Wristlet, which is priced at a mere $7.
Designed as a wrist strap, Google’s Rope Wristlet stands in contrast to Apple’s shoulder-sling Crossbody Strap. It features a polyester cord attaching to a D-shaped insert that fits snugly between your phone and its case. Although marketed primarily for Pixel phones, this wristlet is expected to be compatible with most devices, provided the case includes a USB-C cutout. However, it’s not suitable for Pixel Fold devices—a limitation Google has attributed to specific case design constraints.
Apple’s strap, on the other hand, employs built-in magnets for quick length adjustments but is limited to working with Apple-made cases or bumpers, making it both more restrictive and pricier by nature. Google’s approach, by contrast, focuses on simplicity, affordability, and broad compatibility.
That $7 price tag allows Google’s Rope Wristlet to undercut Apple’s offering substantially. With the savings on just one Crossbody Strap, a consumer could purchase several of Google’s Wristlets. Available in three dual-tone combinations—Purple/Blue, Green/Yellow, and Black/Grey—none perfectly align with the Pixel 10’s color scheme, yet they’re versatile enough for everyday appeal. While the cord features a subtle Google logo, the design remains straightforward without aiming for premium frills.
Clearly, both Apple and Google see potential in the resurgence of phone straps. Apple’s emphasis is on fashion-forward exclusivity, contrasted with Google’s focus on practicality and affordability. Whether considered as style accessories or mere safety enhancements to prevent accidental phone slips, the rivalry between these tech behemoths signals straps becoming a noteworthy market segment.
While Google’s Rope Wristlet might lack Apple’s polished magnetic features, its $7 price makes phone accessorizing attainable to a wide audience. The strap era could indeed be on the verge of a revival, and it appears to be about more than just fashion—it’s about offering consumers more choices.
