Apple made some big changes to the iPhone 17 and iPhone Air in the camera department, with the new Center Stage front camera being the highlight. In a recent interview with BW Businessworld, Apple camera software chief Jon McCormack and iPhone product manager Megan Nash explained the changes.

A Rethink of the Selfie Experience

Apple noticed users relying on selfie sticks, switching to the 0.5× ultra-wide lens, rotating the phone, or passing it to the tallest friend. “Our users are trying to make the camera work for them, but we knew we could do better,” McCormack said.

The new front camera automatically adjusts framing, eliminating that friction.

McCormack, in a separate interview, revealed that the new camera tech took years to develop and is made possible only because of the processing power and industrial design of the iPhone 17.

Nash added that the A19 and A19 Pro chips use the Apple Camera Interface (ACI) for faster sensor-to-chip data transfer.

She further highlighted that, beyond the improved capture process, the output has also received thoughtful refinements. Keeping the iPhone in portrait orientation ensures that subjects’ eyes are always directed at the right spot, fixing a common issue with landscape selfies.

The improvements extend to video as well. McCormack explained that the front camera now uses a larger overscan region on the sensor for enhanced stability and smart framing. Action mode is activated automatically for selfie videos, letting users walk, bike, or run while recording without worrying about shaky footage.

Silicon Advancements Powering Smarter Cameras

The new Center Stage front camera reflects Apple’s broader goal of using its silicon capabilities to make the camera “invisible” to the user. By automating framing, stabilization, and orientation, Apple aims to let people focus on the moment rather than the settings.
