Apple Music now lets users import playlists from Spotify and other services directly within the app.
In a surprising move, Apple has quietly added a much-requested feature to Apple Music, allowing users to directly import from third-party streaming platforms like Spotify into Apple Music. According to a support document, the feature is currently limited to Australia and New Zealand, but will soon expand globally.
To make things happen, Apple has partnered with SongShift, a popular app known for moving playlists between platforms. Apple has integrated the playlist and library transfer option directly into the Apple Music app. This move eliminates the need for external apps and makes it easier than ever for new users to switch from services like Spotify, YouTube Music, and Amazon Music.
On iPhone and iPad:
Once done, Apple Music will look for an exact match for each song you selected in its own catalog and add it to your Apple Music library. If it fails to find an exact match, Apple will mark those items as “Needs Review,” offering alternate versions you can manually approve.
Note: Only user-created playlists can be transferred—not curated or editorial playlists.
This transfer feature is also available on the Apple Music web app.
The best thing about the new transfer feature is that Apple has ensured this is a one-way sync. This ensures that your playlists and songs in the original music service remain untouched.
A major reason many users hesitate to switch platforms is the fear of losing their meticulously curated music libraries. By removing that pain point, Apple has opened the door for users to make the switch without starting over from scratch.
The global expansion of the feature could be a game-changer for Apple Music adoption.
