Apple has finally pushed its Pro lineup forward with the new iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. The new model is faster, smarter, and more capable than the predecessor, but the differences aren’t obvious at first glance.
Both phones share a similar design and many of the same features, so I wondered what has actually changed and whether it’s worth upgrading. To find the answer, I’ve compared the iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone 17 Pro Max across the camera, performance, battery life, AI features, price, and more to see where the new model really stands out.

The interesting part is that several headline specifications remain unchanged. The real difference is what Apple has improved underneath them.
Design and display: What actually changed?
If I were upgrading purely for the screen, I wouldn’t.
The iPhone 18 Pro Max retains the familiar 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR display, 120Hz ProMotion, Always-On display, and 3000-nit peak outdoor brightness. The dimensions are also essentially unchanged at 163.4mm tall, 78mm wide, and 8.75mm thick. Although it’s ~16 grams heavier than the 17 Pro Max.
The biggest visible change is actually the Dynamic Island. Apple has redesigned it to occupy less space while displaying more information. The iPhone 18 Pro Max can show up to three Live Activities simultaneously, which could make things such as sports scores, navigation and music controls more useful at a glance.
The material story also stays familiar. The iPhone 18 Pro Max uses an aluminum unibody with Ceramic Shield 2 on the front and Ceramic Shield on the back. The new finishes are Black, Silver, Glacier and Burgundy, replacing the iPhone 17 Pro Max’s Cosmic Orange and Deep Blue options.
My takeaway: the iPhone 18 Pro Max doesn’t offer a design overhaul. It’s a refinement. The smaller Dynamic Island is the change I expect to notice most in everyday use.
A20 Pro vs A19 Pro: The biggest performance upgrade
This is where I feel the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts to separate itself from its predecessor.
The new A20 Pro is built using a 2-nanometer process and features a 6-core CPU, 7-core GPU with Neural Accelerators, and a Dual 16-core Neural Engine. Apple says it has 50% more memory bandwidth than A19 Pro, while the GPU can be up to 40% faster. This same chip powers the new foldable iPhone Duo.
But the raw speed isn’t the part I find most interesting.
Apple has redesigned the chip packaging and paired it with a next-generation vapor chamber, which can deliver up to a 40% gain in sustained performance over the previous generation. That matters because sustained performance is what I care about when a phone is rendering video, playing a demanding game, or processing AI workloads for several minutes.
The Neural Engine is another major change. A20 Pro has 32 Neural Engine cores in total, giving it twice the AI processing capability Apple attributes to A19 Pro. That extra headroom is particularly important as Apple pushes more AI processing directly onto the iPhone. We have shared a more detailed breakdown in our A20 Pro guide.
For everyday apps, I don’t expect the iPhone 18 Pro Max to suddenly feel twice as fast. But for gaming, video editing, and on-device AI, this is one of the more meaningful generational upgrades.
Camera: The upgrade I’d pay attention to
If I had to pick one reason to buy the iPhone 18 Pro Max over the iPhone 17 Pro Max, I’d pick the camera.
The headline feature is Apple’s new 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture. This is something the iPhone 17 Pro Max doesn’t have. The aperture can move between ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8 and ƒ/4.0.
Why does that matter? A wider aperture can let in more light, while a narrower aperture can give you greater depth of field. Apple says the system can automatically adjust for lighting and depth of field, while photographers can manually select the aperture from the Camera app.
New Pro controls allow manual adjustment of aperture, shutter speed, and white balance, alongside a histogram. Moreover, Photographic Styles 3 adds new texture and grain controls, and Smart focus tracking helps capture moving subjects.
The rest of the camera system remains familiar. The iPhone 18 Pro Max still has 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide and 48MP Fusion Telephoto cameras, with 4x and 8x optical-quality telephoto options. The 18MP Centre Stage front camera also carries over.
There are meaningful video upgrades too, including the ability to apply Cinematic effects after recording and new 4K Dolby Vision HDR time-lapse capabilities.
If you bought the iPhone 17 Pro Max mainly for its camera, the iPhone 18 Pro Max gives you the clearest reason to consider upgrading.
Battery life and charging: How much better is it?
Battery life is another area where the iPhone 18 Pro Max makes a noticeable numerical jump.
The iPhone 17 Pro Max offers up to 39 hours of video playback. The iPhone 18 Pro Max reaches up to 43 hours, a four-hour increase. Apple attributes the improvement to a larger battery combined with the efficiency gains of its new silicon.
Charging is faster, too. The iPhone 18 Pro Max can get around seven hours of video playback from a five-minute wired charge, according to Apple’s testing. Moreover, you can get up to 50% in around 15 minutes when using a 60W-capable adapter or higher with Adjustable Voltage Supply.
This is the sort of upgrade I appreciate more than a benchmark score. If I leave home with a nearly empty phone, a few minutes connected to a charger suddenly become much more useful. For heavy users, the battery upgrade alone makes the iPhone 18 Pro Max more attractive.
AI and Siri: iPhone 18 Pro Max vs iPhone 17 Pro Max
This is where the A20 Pro upgrade becomes more relevant. Both phones support Apple Intelligence, but the iPhone 18 Pro Max launches with iOS 27 and the new Siri AI experience.
Siri AI is designed to understand personal context across apps such as Messages, Mail, and Photos. It can also use on-screen awareness, answer questions, and interact with what you’re seeing through the Camera app.
Apple is also adding more AI-powered tools across iOS 27, including improved Clean Up, Image Playground, Spatial Reframing, and Safari’s Notify Me feature.
The important distinction is that the iPhone 18 Pro Max has considerably more AI processing headroom, thanks to the A20 Pro’s Neural Engine and Neural Accelerators.
That doesn’t mean the iPhone 17 Pro Max suddenly becomes useless for Apple Intelligence. Instead, I see the 18 Pro Max as the better long-term choice if AI is going to become a major part of how I use my phone.
Connectivity with the new Apple C2 Modem
The iPhone 18 Pro Max also gets Apple’s C2 modem system, replacing the previous generation’s C1X.
C2 works alongside the A20 Pro and introduces AI-powered improvements intended to improve cellular quality and reliability. Apple says it can deliver faster uploads in selected markets while consuming 15% less energy than C1X. It also supports mmWave in the US.
The iPhone 18 Pro Max also retains Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread through Apple’s N1 wireless networking chip.
I wouldn’t upgrade from an iPhone 17 Pro Max solely for the modem. But improved cellular efficiency, reliability, and upload speeds are the kind of behind-the-scenes upgrades that can make a flagship feel better over years of ownership.
iPhone 18 Pro Max vs iPhone 17 Pro Max: Price difference
This is where the decision becomes more complicated.
The iPhone 17 Pro Max launched at $1,199, with 256GB storage. It was also available in 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB configurations.
The iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299 in the US and continues to offer 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB storage options.
The bigger point is that the iPhone 17 Pro Max is still an extremely capable phone. If retailers offer meaningful discounts on it, the older model could become the better value.
What hasn’t changed?
This is an important part of the comparison because the iPhone 18 Pro Max isn’t a complete redesign.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max already introduced a major camera and thermal-performance overhaul, so Apple isn’t starting from scratch with the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
That’s why I’d describe this generation as a deeper refinement rather than a visual revolution.
My verdict: Should you upgrade?
If I already owned an iPhone 17 Pro Max, I wouldn’t upgrade just because the number changed from 17 to 18. But I would seriously consider the iPhone 18 Pro Max if camera photography, sustained performance, battery life, or AI were priorities for me.
Buy iPhone 18 Pro Max if you:
- Want the best iPhone camera Apple currently offers.
- Shoot a lot of photos or video.
- Play demanding games or edit video on my phone.
- Want maximum battery life.
- Like to use the newest Siri AI features.
- Are upgrading from an iPhone 15 Pro Max or older.
Keep the iPhone 17 Pro Max if:
- You’re already happy with its camera.
- Battery life already feels like enough.
- Don’t care much about AI features.
- Mostly use your phone for messaging, social media, and streaming.
- You are getting the 17 Pro Max at a significant discount.
My bottom line: the iPhone 18 Pro Max is not the kind of upgrade that makes the iPhone 17 Pro Max obsolete. Instead, Apple has taken an already powerful flagship and attacked the areas that matter most over a long ownership period, such as camera flexibility, sustained performance, battery life, charging, cellular efficiency, and AI.
If I were buying a Pro Max today and the price difference were reasonable, I’d choose the iPhone 18 Pro Max. But if I already owned the iPhone 17 Pro Max, I’d upgrade only if I genuinely cared about the new camera system or AI capabilities.
