Instagram Reels May Soon Play in Picture-in-Picture Mode
Instagram is experimenting with Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode for Reels. The feature lets you keep watching videos in a floating window even after leaving the app.

- Meta is testing Picture-in-Picture for Instagram Reels: A floating window lets you keep watching Reels after leaving the app, similar to YouTube’s PiP.
- You can enable PiP through a prompt and settings toggle: Tap “Try it” when offered, then manage the feature inside the Share Sheet or app settings.
- Instagram head Adam Mosseri acknowledged PiP requests earlier: He confirmed the feature was under discussion, and this limited test shows Meta is now moving forward with it.
- PiP availability is restricted to a small group of testers: There’s no confirmation yet about wider availability or when a global rollout might happen.
- PiP could make Instagram more competitive but carries rollout risks: It may boost Reels engagement, but user demand and Meta’s expansion plans remain unclear.
Following in the footsteps of YouTube and TikTok, Meta is experimenting with a new Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode feature for Instagram. The new feature, currently available to a select group of users, allows them to view Instagram Reels in a floating PiP window even after exiting the app.
The feature was first spotted by Radu Onescu on Threads, where a pop-up prompt encouraged users to “Try picture in picture” while browsing Reels. The prompt reads:
Turn this on to continue watching Reels in a floating window on your device after you’ve left Instagram.
How the New Feature Works
When Instagram shows you the “Try picture in picture” prompt, simply tap the Try it button to access the Instagram Share Sheet, where you can toggle a PiP switch. You can also manage this setting later in the menu.
Not a Surprise Move
This PiP window mode isn’t a random experiment from Meta. Earlier this year, Instagram chief Adam Mosseri acknowledged requests for a PiP option, saying he would discuss it with the team. This test now suggests progress toward that idea.
Still in Limited Testing
While it’s a welcome addition for most users, PiP for Reels, like other experimental features, is only available to a small group of users for now. If expanded, it could bring the platform closer in line with video-first rivals like YouTube and TikTok.
However, Meta has not shared any information on when or if the feature will roll out globally.
