How to Use X/Twitter Spaces: Everything You Need to Know
X Spaces (formerly Twitter Spaces) turns scrolling into real conversations. Here’s everything you need to know to join, host, and grow with Spaces in 2025.
As podcast buzz grows, have you ever wanted to host your own talk show without a studio? That’s exactly what X Spaces (formerly Twitter Spaces) lets you do. It’s a live audio feature on X where you can join real-time conversations, share ideas, or just listen in.
In this guide, you’ll learn what X Spaces are, why they matter, how to join or host one, and the latest features like Clipping, co-hosting, video, and replays that make them even more powerful.
X Spaces are live, audio-only chat rooms where hosts start a conversation, and listeners can tune in, react with emojis, or request to speak.
Up to 13 participants (1 host, 2 co-hosts, and 10 speakers) can chat at once.
Thousands of others can listen silently in the background.
Spaces are public by default, so anyone on X can find them in timelines, notifications, or search.
Blocked users cannot join your Space.
It’s like a podcast, talk show, and group chat rolled into one—but live and interactive.
Why Use X Spaces?
Spaces make X more engaging than just scrolling. Here’s why they’re worth your time:
Live interaction: Get instant feedback, ideas, and reactions.
Audience engagement: Your voice builds stronger connections than posts alone.
Expert talks & AMAs: Perfect for interviews, Q&As, or panel discussions.
Content repurposing: Clip highlights, quotes, or audio snippets later.
Low barrier: No studio or camera needed—just your phone.
Community building: Regular chats foster trust and belonging.
Brand growth: Spaces boost awareness and position you as a thought leader.
Personally, it’s my secret weapon for beating loneliness on rainy days!
Getting Started with X Spaces
Starting with X Spaces is actually pretty simple. The steps vary slightly for iPhone, Android, and desktop. But first, a few prerequisites:
Your X app must be updated to use the latest Space features.
Ensure your microphone permissions are enabled, so X can access your microphone when you speak.
You don’t need a fancy setup. However, having a quiet space or a good headset can help make your audio clearer.
You should also consider what your topic will be, how long the Space will run, and whether you want to record it for later.
Once you’re set up, you can either start a Space right away or schedule one for later, invite people, moderate the conversation, and more.
How to Join Spaces
Want to listen in on a Space? Here’s how to join, whether you’re using a phone or computer.
On iPhone and Android
Open your X app and tap your profile picture at the top.
Select Spaces to see all the live chats happening.
For the first time, you will see a pop-up. Tap Check out Spaces to continue.
You will find purple banners with the topic name, host or speaker name, sorted by listener count. There are also upcoming Spaces listed.
Scroll down and tap on the banner you like, and you’ll see the Host, Co-host, and speakers’ names with profile pictures. Tap Start listening to join.
If you don’t want to reveal your profile, toggle on Listen anonymously and then tap Start listening anonymously.
Now, you will see the chat going on. Tap the people icon to view all speakers and Listeners.
If you want to speak, tap the Request button (not for anonymous listeners). Once the host approves, you can unmute yourself and start speaking.
To show your reaction, tap the heart icon and select an emoji. You can also raise your hand to grab the host’s attention.
Similar to text posts, you can also write a reply to the Space. Simply tap the message icon and post your reply.
If you can’t hear the audio right now, you can Turn on captions from the three-dot icon.
You can also enter a Space via a link shared by someone from a tweet, a DM, or elsewhere. Also, you will see purple icons at the top of your feed whenever someone you follow is hosting a Space.
On Desktop or Web
On desktop or web (browser), you cannot directly join a Space as of now. But I have found a clever workaround. Here’s how:
Open x.com via your favorite browser and log in to your account.
Click the search bar at the top right corner and enter filter:spaces to find live discussions.
You will see posts with Spaces links or banners like the mobile app. Click the link and select Start listening. For banners, click Listen live > Start listening.
Rest all the features, such as anonymous listening, request to talk, reactions, etc.
How to Host a Space
Hosting is simple—no follower minimums or verification needed. Just be 13+ and follow community guidelines.
On iPhone and Android
On your X’s home screen, tap and hold the + icon and select the mic icon to create a Space.
Name your Space depending on what you want to talk about. Keep it catchy and use hashtags.
Tap Add topics and select the top three relevant options to make your Space easier to find. Tap Save to proceed.
You can toggle on Record Space if you want to keep it on your timeline. Thus, your followers can listen to it later if they miss the live session.
To make the session more interactive, you can even share your video via FaceTime. Simply, toggle on Enable video.
Now, if you want to start immediately, tap Start now or select the calendar icon to schedule it for later.
Your Space will go live with a background sound. Tap Music to change the tune.
X also offers some fun features. Tap the magic wand icon.
From here, you can play emoji sounds like laughing, clapping, car honks, etc. You can also change your voice by moving to the Voice tab and swiping through the transformers.
Once you are set, tap the Mic icon and start talking.
You will be prompted to invite users you talk to frequently. You can also go to people icon > Invite speakers and search for profiles to send an invitation.
Once you start a Space, it’ll be posted to your timeline, allowing your followers to join it. Moreover, you can tap the share button and copy the link to share with others.
On Desktop
From the X homepage, click on More and select Create your Space.
Now, choose Who can speak on your Space from the dropdown and enter your topic.
If you want to record the session, toggle on Record Space and click Start now or schedule it for later.
Your Space is live! Click the Mic icon to unmute yourself and talk.
As I tested the feature, I noticed Space on X mobile platform offers way more features than web. So, if you’re really into it, use your iPhone or Android for more fun.
Managing Your Space
Once your Space is live, as a host, you have tools to keep the conversation flowing smoothly. Here are some of the big ones:
Assign a Co-Host
You can promote someone to co-host mid-way through a Space. Co-hosts help you moderate the Space, manage speakers, mute or remove someone, and keep things on track.
You can add co-hosts by tapping a person’s profile picture in the Space or selecting the people icon and choosing who to assign the role. Select Make co-host.
If the original host leaves the Space, the first co-host added will automatically become the main host.
If you, as a co-host, leave the Space, you will lose your title and rejoin as a Listener.
Also, you can remove your co-host title on your own if you don’t like it.
Pin a Tweet
If you want to share a tweet inside the Space for context or references, you can pin or share a tweet directly into the Space. This ensures everyone in the Space, even those who join after you pin it, will be able to see the tweet at the very top. They can tap the banner to directly go to the post.
Once you’re in an active Space, tap the down arrow at the top left corner to minimize it.
Now, tap your profile picture and select Profile to go to your feed.
Find the tweet you want to pin, tap the share icon below it, and select the Space name.
You can do this with any X post; it doesn’t necessarily have to be yours. This can help guide the conversation, prompt discussion, or highlight key points without relying only on audio. To remove the post, tap the x icon beside it and confirm your choice on the prompt.
Manage Speakers
By default, only people you invite can speak unless you change the settings. You can change speaker permissions from the three-dot icon > Adjust settings to allow Everyone, People you follow, or Only people you invite to speak.
You can invite listeners to speak or accept requests from listeners who want to speak. Simply tap the people icon, move to the Request tab, and approve a speaker. Only 10 people, excluding the host and co-host, can speak at a time.
Hosts (or co-hosts) can mute or remove speakers who disrupt the conversation and help moderate the Space. Tap the speaker’s profile picture and select the option. You can also directly block or report the user.
How to End a X Space
Had a good convo? So, it’s time to say bye. Ending a Space is slightly different depending on whether you’re hosting or just listening.
If you’re a listener
You can leave the Space at any time by tapping the Leave option in the top right corner.
If you were listening anonymously, you can also leave quietly without being listed among the participants.
If you’re the host
To end the Space, simply tap End and select the Yes, end option on the prompt.
Now, you will see a summary page. Tap the insights icon to see the analytics for your Space.
Once ended, the live conversation stops, and listeners are booted out of the live session.
After you finish it, if you have enabled recording, the replay may become available for people to listen to later.
How to Schedule a X Space
If you want to announce it, gather an audience, or run promotions, scheduling a Space is a smart move. X allows you to schedule up to 30 days in advance, with a maximum of 10 Spaces (impromptu sessions do not count).
When creating, tap the schedulericon instead of starting it immediately.
Scroll the calendar, pick a date and time, and select Schedule.
Now, you can share it on your timeline and DM the link to followers. Guests can set reminders as well by tapping the bell icon.
Once scheduled, you can find it in the Upcoming Spaces list. Start creating a Space and tap the calendar icon at the top.
Select a scheduled Space and tap Edit. Change details like the title or time and Save changes.
If you have changed your mind, tap the three-dot next to the Space, select Cancel this Space, and confirm your choice.
As go-time nears, you’ll get push notifications about your upcoming session.
Tips To Get the Most Out of X Spaces
With the steps above, you can begin your Space journey. However, the following tips will help you level up your game:
Plan ahead: Have a rough outline or discussion flow, especially if you’re doing interviews or Q&A formats.
Promote your Space: Let people know in advance that you’re hosting a Space. Schedule a session, tweet about it, and share the link ruthlessly.
Engage with your audience: Encourage listeners to ask questions, react, or request to speak.
Use good audio: If possible, host from a quiet place, use headphones or an external mic, and test your audio beforehand.
Moderate thoughtfully: Be ready to manage speakers, mute or remove people who derail the conversation, and keep things within X rules.
Leverage clips and replays: Tap the clipping icon and share a 30-second audio highlight via post. Also, share the recording to reach people who missed the live chat.
Wrap up cleanly: Finish with a summary, final thoughts, and a call to action like join me next week for another chat.
Review feedback: After the Space, look at the insights and analytics. This helps you improve future Spaces.
Troubleshooting Common X Spaces Issues
Glitches happen; here’s your fix kit:
Problem
Possible Fix
I can’t hear anything in the Space
Check your phone’s volume, confirm X has microphone and audio access, and ensure your device not connected to Bluetooth.
People can’t hear me when I speak
Ensure X has permission to access your mic, check microphone settings, and try switching to a different headset or mic if needed.
Listeners can’t request to speak or the request button is missing
The host may have disabled speaker permissions. Adjust who is allowed to request to speak or speak directly.
My scheduled Space didn’t show up / people didn’t join
Double-check that you actually scheduled it. Also, promote the Space ahead of time so people know to join.
Recording or replay didn’t show up
You might not have toggled the record option when starting the Space, or X may have restricted the recording based on policy.
Audio keeps cutting out or is choppy
This can be due to poor internet connectivity or background noise. Moving to a quieter location or using a stable Wi-Fi/mobile network can help.
I’m on desktop and mic isn’t working
Browser permission settings might be blocking mic access.
That’s everything you need to know about using X Spaces in 2025. From joining live chats to hosting your own talk show, Spaces is one of the easiest ways to connect with people in real time.
So, what’s stopping you? Fire up a Space this week, invite your crew, and make some noise.
