How to Add a Second Person to Face ID on iPhone and iPad

When Face ID was first introduced in iOS 11, you could only add a single face to it. But from iOS 12, it became possible to set up alternate appearance to Face ID. You can use this feature to add a second person to Face ID. Moreover, it comes handy when you want to unlock your phone while wearing a face mask. Let’s move on…

How to Add an Alternate Appearance to Face ID on iPhone or iPad

Step #1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.

Step #2. Tap on Face ID & Passcode.

Step #3. Enter your iPhone Passcode and tap on Set Up an Alternative Appearance.

Step #4. Tap Get Started.

Step #5. Now, ask the second person to follow the on-screen instructions. That is, position the face in the frame and then slowly move the head in a circle to show all angles of the face. Once done, tap Continue.

Step #6. Finally, tap Done to finish.

How to Delete Alternative Face ID

Please keep in mind that, this will remove not only the alternate appearance but yours too. After that, you will have to set up Face ID again for yourself.

Step #1. Open the Settings on your device.

Step #2. Tap on Face ID & Passcode.

Step #3. Tap on Reset Face ID.

The fact is you do not need to set up an alternate appearance in most cases. Face ID is advanced enough to continuously learn your facial changes like growing/shaving beard or mustache, different haircuts, glasses, etc.

Also, another Face ID that you added will be able to make purchases from iTunes and App Store, see your iCloud Keychain passwords, and more. So, ensure that you add a person whom you trust.

  1. You cannot get Face ID on iPhone 8 because it was first introduced on the iPhone X. It’s a hardware feature so you cannot get it through software update. Maybe it’s time to upgrade your iPhone to one of the latest models. 🙂
