Google Maps could soon gain Gemini support on Apple CarPlay, based on code references discovered by MacRumors inside the latest version of the app.
The integration is not live yet, but strings found in the app suggest Google is preparing to bring Gemini-powered conversational features to the CarPlay version of Google Maps.
Gemini could bring AI-powered navigation to CarPlay
On iPhone, Google Maps already supports Gemini through an “Ask Maps” feature that lets users ask more natural and detailed questions about places, directions, and destinations.
Instead of sticking to basic navigation commands, users can ask more conversational questions about places and destinations. Gemini can also provide additional context about locations while users are navigating.
The discovered code suggests a similar experience could be heading to CarPlay. Users may be able to ask Gemini to navigate somewhere directly through voice interaction after agreeing to the updated terms within the iPhone app.
iOS 26.4 likely made this possible
Apple recently opened CarPlay to third-party conversational AI apps through changes introduced in iOS 26.4.
That appears to be what allowed Google to begin working on Gemini integration for Maps in CarPlay. Until recently, these kinds of voice-based AI interactions were not supported for third-party apps in Apple’s in-car system.
The move also fits into a larger trend. AI assistants like ChatGPT, Grok, and Perplexity are already making their way into CarPlay, giving users more options beyond traditional voice controls.
Not available yet, but likely coming soon
Google has not officially announced Gemini support for CarPlay, and the feature has not been enabled yet.
Still, the presence of the framework within the app strongly suggests the feature is already in development and could begin rolling out in the near future.
