Anthropic is folding Claude Cowork into the main Claude chat experience. In its September 16 announcement, the company says users will be able to ask a quick question or hand over a larger task from the same conversation, without first choosing between Chat and Cowork.
The change is rolling out to Pro and Max subscribers over the next few weeks on Claude’s web, desktop, and mobile apps. Team and Free plans will follow, while Enterprise administrators will receive at least 30 days’ notice before their organizations move over.
One conversation can handle quick questions and bigger tasks
The new experience lets Claude decide what a request needs. A conversation can stay short, or turn into research, a report, a spreadsheet, or a presentation that Claude works on after you step away.
Anthropic’s Help Center guide says existing chats, tasks, projects, artifacts, connectors, and skills come with the account when it moves to the new experience. Once the change reaches an account, users cannot switch back to separate Chat and Cowork options.
Docs, Slides, and Design move into the conversation
Anthropic is also adding Claude Docs and Claude Slides, while Claude Design can now work inside regular conversations. The company says all three are in beta on paid plans. Users can edit the results, share them by link, or export a presentation as a PowerPoint or PDF.
The useful part is the handoff. Someone can start with a question, ask Claude to gather information, and finish with a document or slide deck in the same thread. The app can also use connected services such as Google Drive, Gmail, Microsoft 365, and Slack while it works.
What happens during the rollout
There is no switch to turn on. If your message box still shows separate Chat and Cowork choices, Anthropic says your account has not moved yet. If a task runs in the cloud, it can continue after you close your laptop. Tasks that need local files or computer apps still require Claude Desktop to remain open.
The change also makes Claude Cowork’s iPhone and web access more central, since users can check progress or answer questions from a phone while a task continues. Claude Code remains a separate coding environment, including workflows covered in Claude Code’s iOS Simulator support on Mac.
The practical shift is simple: users no longer need to decide where a task belongs before they start typing. The new unified experience is arriving gradually, and the older Chat and Cowork choices will disappear only when Anthropic moves each account over.
