Apple is reportedly developing two new Apple Pencil models for release alongside its next iPad Pro lineup in 2027.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple is working on replacements for both the lower-cost Apple Pencil with USB-C and the Apple Pencil Pro. The timing fits Apple’s wider 2027 iPad Pro roadmap, which points to new 11-inch and 13-inch models in the spring.
Both current Apple Pencil tiers are getting refreshed
The updated USB-C model is reportedly code-named B582, while the new Apple Pencil Pro is known internally as B632. Apple has not announced either product, and the report does not reveal final designs, prices, compatibility, or new drawing features.
The two current models serve different users. Apple Pencil (USB-C) covers note-taking and basic drawing at a lower price, while Apple Pencil Pro adds pressure sensitivity, squeeze controls, haptic feedback, barrel roll, double-tap, wireless charging, and Find My support. Our Apple Pencil comparison breaks down those differences in detail.
Apple introduced the USB-C Apple Pencil in late 2023. Apple Pencil Pro followed in May 2024 alongside the M4 iPad Pro, so both will be roughly three years old if the reported 2027 refresh happens.
EU battery rules could drive the biggest change
Gurman says Apple is working to meet upcoming European Union requirements for more replaceable batteries in consumer electronics. One possibility is that the new Pencils will use “new battery systems.”
The EU’s Battery Regulation begins applying its portable-battery removability rules on February 18, 2027. The regulation generally requires batteries built into appliances to be removable and replaceable by the end user, although it includes limited exemptions.
A replaceable battery would be a meaningful change for Apple Pencil. Its slim, tightly sealed body leaves owners with no practical way to replace an aging battery today. Still, Bloomberg has not confirmed that the 2027 models will have user-replaceable batteries, so that detail should remain firmly in rumor territory.
What this means if you are buying now
There is no need to delay an Apple Pencil purchase solely because of this report. The rumored models are still months away, and Apple Pencil support varies by iPad model.
