WhatsApp is testing a new AI-powered “Writing Help” tool on iOS. Here’s how it works, the privacy protections, and when you can expect its release.
WhatsApp is testing a new Meta AI-powered tool named “Writing Help” in its latest iOS beta release. The feature under testing works similarly to how the “Write with AI” tool works in Instagram, which suggests alternative replies tailored to different tones.
As reported by WABetaInfo, the tool only appears when Private Processing is enabled in your WhatsApp account settings. Unlike the “Write with AI” on Instagram, this tool doesn’t require you to select the text you typed. Instead, after typing a short phrase in the chat box, the sticker icon changes to a pen symbol, indicating that AI suggestions are available.
When you tap the pen icon, WhatsApp provides you with at least three alternative versions of the same text, with improved structure, clarity, or tone. This makes it easier for you to craft polished and personalized messages before sending them.
The three alternative versions are based on one of five tones that the user can choose from:
Most importantly, the recipient won’t know that you’ve used AI to write the message.
Meta deems this feature privacy-packed as it runs on its Private Processing system, the same architecture used for Meta AI features in other apps.
The feature isn’t enabled by default; it’s opt-in only. Since the tool runs on the Private Processing system, all the messages are processed anonymously and remain encrypted. Plus, it works only on the text currently being typed, meaning your past chat history remains safe.
As for the availability, the feature is currently in beta testing with no confirmed release date. However, given Meta’s rapid push into AI-driven features, it may soon roll out to all WhatsApp users.
