iPhone 18 Pro’s A20 Pro chip may have seven GPU cores

    A Weibo leaker’s claimed A20 Pro board diagrams point to seven GPU cores and faster memory for the iPhone 18 Pro. Apple has not confirmed the design.

    Apple’s unannounced A20 Pro chip may add a seventh GPU core, according to a Weibo post from user Fried White Rice. The same reconstruction points to a faster memory interface and a larger cache for the efficiency cores.

    The evidence is indirect. The images show claimed solder-joint positions on the circuit board, not a photograph of the A20 Pro die. The seven-core reading is an inference from that layout, so it should be treated as a plausible leak rather than a specification.

    The leak keeps the six-core CPU layout

    The analysis suggests that A20 Pro will retain six CPU cores, split between two performance cores and four efficiency cores. That matches Apple’s official A19 Pro specifications for the iPhone 17 Pro.

    The more interesting change is on the graphics side. The diagrams can apparently fit six, seven, or eight GPU cores, but the leaker’s testing of several possible layouts points to seven as the most likely arrangement. A19 Pro has a six-core GPU, so the claim would give the iPhone 18 Pro one more graphics core than its predecessor.

    The reconstruction also points to about 8MB of L2 cache for the four efficiency cores, up from 6MB on A19 Pro. The two performance cores are expected to keep 16MB of L2 cache. The layout is also being read as a faster or wider memory interface, but the leak does not establish the final RAM speed or bandwidth.

    More GPU hardware could help demanding apps

    An extra GPU core could give the iPhone 18 Pro more room for demanding games, video effects, 3D work, and on-device AI. It will not automatically make every task 16% faster. Clock speeds, memory bandwidth, cooling, and Apple’s software all affect the result.

    The suspected memory change may matter just as much. GPUs constantly move data between the chip and memory, so a wider interface could help keep the extra graphics hardware fed. That is still part of the same indirect reading, though. Apple has not confirmed a memory type, bus width, or performance figure for A20 Pro.

    The rumor fits a wider set of reports about Apple’s next iPhone cycle. Recent iOS 27 beta code references point to iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and a foldable arriving in the fall, with other iPhone 18 models following later. Separate iPhone 18 Pro hardware leaks have also pointed to a smaller Dynamic Island, but none of these reports confirm the final design or specifications.

    Apple could reveal the chip next week

    Apple has confirmed a special event for September 9, but it has not named the iPhone 18 Pro or A20 Pro. The event is the first obvious chance for Apple to share official details about the chip, although the company could also leave some architecture information for its technical specifications pages.

    Until then, the safest read is that A20 Pro may have a seven-core GPU, more efficiency-core cache, and a faster memory subsystem. The board diagrams make the claim interesting, but they do not turn a leak into a finished product sheet.
