Design: A Plateau That Changes The Entire Look

This year, Apple switched from titanium to aerospace‑grade aluminum. It might look like a downgrade from titanium, but the new unibody design gives it a stronger frame. The Pro weighs 206gm, while the Pro Max goes up to 231gm.

The new “plateau” camera bump stretches across the back, making room for a larger battery and the telephoto zoom hardware. Ceramic Shield 2 now protects both front and back, with 3× better scratch resistance and 4× stronger crack resistance than last year. The bold new Cosmic Orange shade is the hero color of the lineup, standing alongside Silver and Deep Blue.

    Display: Brighter Than Ever

Apple kept the same sizes: 6.3 inches for the Pro and 6.9 for the Pro Max. Both models come with the same Super Retina XDR display at 460 ppi. Peak brightness hits 3,000 nits, making it the brightest iPhone screen yet.

A new anti‑reflective coating doubles outdoor contrast. Just like before, these Pro models support ProMotion 120Hz and Always‑On display. However, this year, these features are no longer Pro‑exclusive.

Performance: A19 Pro With Next‑Level Cooling

Under the hood, the new A19 Pro chip pushes performance up to 40% higher than last year. It comes with a 6‑core CPU (2 performance and 4 efficiency cores), a 6‑core GPU with Neural Accelerators, and a 16‑core Neural Engine, all working together to deliver hardware‑accelerated ray tracing.

Apple also added a laser‑welded vapor chamber that uses de‑ionized water to move heat into the aluminum body, helping the phone stay cool and perform smoothly even during heavy use. The result: faster games, better AI processing, and sustained peak speeds. The new N1 chip upgrades wireless with Wi‑Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, Thread, and stronger AirDrop and Hotspot reliability.

Cameras: Eight Lenses in Your Pocket

Apple calls this its most advanced Pro camera system ever. Three 48MP sensors give you the equivalent of eight lenses:

    • Main (24mm): Larger sensor with second‑gen OIS for brighter low‑light shots.
    • Ultra‑Wide (13mm): Sharper detail, improved macro, 120° field of view.
    • Telephoto (100mm): Tetraprism lens with 4x optical zoom, plus an 8x optical‑quality zoom at 200mm, the longest ever on iPhone.

You can zoom smoothly from 0.5x to 8x with optical clarity, and push further up to 40x using digital zoom. The Photonic Engine now reduces noise and makes colors look more natural. Up front, there’s a new 18MP Center Stage camera with a square sensor that automatically rotates, expands for group selfies, and keeps 4K HDR video steady. With Dual Capture, you can even record from the front and back cameras at the same time.

Pro shooters get industry‑firsts: ProRes RAW, Apple Log 2, ACES workflows, and even genlock for syncing multiple cameras in real time. With external storage, you can record Dolby Vision HDR up to 4K120. For YouTubers, filmmakers, or content creators, this is the most complete iPhone video package yet.

    Battery and Charging: Biggest Ever

Apple gave the Pro models their biggest batteries ever, and the results show. The iPhone 17 Pro lasts up to 31 hours of video playback (28 hours if streaming), while the Pro Max pushes to 37 hours, or 33 hours when streaming. In eSIM‑only versions, the batteries are larger still, with the Pro Max stretching to 39 hours.

Fast charging is supported on both: around 50% in 20 minutes with Apple’s 40W USB‑C adapter, or about 30 minutes using a 30W or higher adapter with MagSafe.

Exact battery sizes aren’t confirmed, but leaks point to the Pro just above 4,500mAh and the Pro Max at roughly 4,832mAh. eSIM‑only models are expected to be bigger still: about 4,252mAh for the Pro and 5,088mAh for the Pro Max, compared to 3,988mAh and 4,823mAh on their SIM tray versions. These differences explain the extended runtime Apple is advertising.

    Connectivity and Extras

Connectivity on the Pro models is loaded. They support:

    • 5G (sub‑6) for fast cellular data
    • Wi‑Fi 7 for stronger and more stable wireless speeds
    • Bluetooth 6 for smoother connections to accessories
    • Thread support for smart home devices
    • 2nd‑gen Ultra Wideband for precise location features

The USB‑C port brings up to 10Gbps transfer speeds and DisplayPort video output, making file transfers and external display use much quicker. The Action button now includes a Camera Control mode, letting you adjust exposure, zoom, and styles instantly. And with IP68 water resistance (up to 6m for 30 minutes), durability is covered too.

    Colors, Storage, and Accessories

Available in Cosmic Orange, Deep Blue, and Silver, the Pro starts at 256GB and goes up to 1TB. Pro Max introduces a massive 2TB option. Accessories include TechWoven, Silicone, and Clear Cases, a new Crossbody Strap, plus Apple’s 40W Dynamic Power Adapter and Qi2 25W MagSafe chargers.

    Availability and Pricing

The iPhone 17 Pro starts at $1,099 in the U.S., and the larger Pro Max at $1,199. Both now include 256GB of storage as the base model. This makes the Pro $100 more than last year’s base model, but in reality you’re paying the same as last year’s 256GB iPhone 16 Pro. The Pro Max, on the other hand, stays at the same entry price.

On monthly plans, the Pro can be financed at $45.79 per month over 24 months, and the Pro Max at $49.95 per month. Storage upgrades, like 512GB, 1TB, and the new 2TB option on the Pro Max, raise the cost by roughly $200 per tier.

Pre‑orders open September 12 at 5 a.m. PT, with general availability beginning September 19 in over 63 countries, and rolling out to 22 more regions on September 26.

    Final Thoughts: Should You Upgrade?

The iPhone 17 Pro lineup is Apple’s biggest Pro upgrade in years. From the all‑new plateau design and the brightest display yet, to the 8x telephoto zoom, ProRes RAW video, and the massive battery improvements, this is a package built for people who want more than just the basics. If you’re using a recent Pro like the iPhone 16, the jump is meaningful but not essential unless you care about cameras, battery life, or pro‑level video. But if you’re on anything older, or you’ve been waiting for Apple to push the Pro line forward in a big way, the iPhone 17 Pro is exactly that moment.
