The iPhone 17 embraces Qi 2.2, unlocking 25W fast wireless charging even with third-party accessories. No MagSafe? No problem—speed and flexibility are here.
Wireless charging is getting a serious upgrade with the iPhone 17. Apple is finally catching up to the next-generation Qi 2.2 standard, bringing faster wireless charging speeds, even when you’re not using Apple’s official MagSafe chargers.
Until now, iPhones have capped wireless charging at 15W when using third-party MagSafe-compatible accessories. Only Apple’s official MagSafe charger could reach 25W, and that too only when paired with a 30W Apple adapter. With Qi 2.2, that restriction is gone. The iPhone 17 is expected to support 25W wireless charging even with third-party chargers, thanks to the new standard.
If Apple follows its usual trend, Qi 2.2 support should extend across the entire iPhone 17 lineup—including the standard iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, and both Pro models.
This isn’t just a minor spec bump—Qi 2.2 introduces meaningful improvements that make wireless charging more efficient and user-friendly. Here’s what you need to know:
The upgrade was confirmed through Taiwan’s NCC regulatory filings, as reported by 91mobiles. The documents revealed new Apple MagSafe chargers (models A3502 and A3503) with Qi 2.2 support. While the design remains the same, these chargers now come with braided cables and deliver faster speeds. Testing documents also show they work with older iPhones, though performance may vary depending on the model.
Third-party manufacturers are already stepping up. Ugreen has announced the MagFlow Magnetic Power Bank—the world’s first officially Qi 2.2-certified charger—set to launch in Q3 2025.
In short, the iPhone 17 doesn’t just bring new hardware—it introduces a faster, more open, and more flexible wireless charging experience. And this time, you’re not locked into Apple’s ecosystem to get the best performance.
Expect more Qi 2.2 accessories to hit the market around September 2025, just in time for the iPhone 17’s big launch.
