Apple is reportedly preparing a major upgrade to its Wallet app with a new “Create a Pass” feature in iOS 27, according to a recent report from Bloomberg. The update is expected to give users greater control over managing digital tickets, memberships, and other passes, addressing one of the most persistent limitations in the current Wallet experience.
A long-awaited upgrade to Apple Wallet passes
For years, Apple Wallet has depended heavily on third-party businesses to support its pass system. In simple terms, users could only add tickets, loyalty cards, coupons, or event passes if the issuing company supported Wallet integration.
This limitation often left users juggling screenshots, emails, or third-party apps just to access basic tickets or memberships.
The upcoming iOS 27 update aims to remove that dependency. With the new feature, users will be able to create their own passes directly within the Wallet app. This marks a shift from a developer-driven system to a more user-first approach, positioning Wallet as a true hub for everything you carry digitally.
How the “Create a Pass” feature will work
According to the report, the new functionality will be accessible via the familiar “+” button in the Wallet app, which is currently used to add cards and passes.
Once inside, users will have multiple ways to create a pass:
- Scan a QR code from a ticket, card, or document
- Use the iPhone camera to capture barcode-based passes
- Manually create a pass if no code is available
After capturing the necessary details, the system will generate a digital pass that can be stored and accessed directly within Wallet.
Customization and pass organization
Apple is also placing a strong emphasis on personalization. The feature is expected to include multiple templates and customization tools, allowing users to tailor passes based on their needs.
Users may be able to:
- Edit text fields and labels
- Add custom images or icons
- Choose from different visual styles
To make organization easier, passes could also be grouped using color-coded templates:
- Purple for event tickets
- Blue for memberships
- Orange for general passes, like coupons or gift cards
This structured layout could make it quicker to identify and access different types of passes at a glance.
Why this update matters
Apple has already expanded Wallet with features like enhanced boarding passes and digital ID support. However, the lack of universal pass support has remained a key gap.
With custom pass creation, users will be able to digitize items that previously couldn’t be added to Wallet. This includes:
