WhatsApp is developing a new Android home screen widget that could let users record and send voice messages without first opening the app. The feature was spotted in the latest WhatsApp beta for Android, although it has not yet been rolled out to beta testers.
According to WABetaInfo, tapping the widget will open a dedicated recording interface where users can record a voice message before selecting one or more recipients. The shortcut is designed to reduce the number of steps required to send voice notes, making the process faster and more convenient for people who use the feature regularly.
How the voice message widget works
The new widget is expected to appear as a resizable 3×1 home screen shortcut.
When tapped, it opens a dedicated voice recording screen within WhatsApp, complete with controls to record, pause, resume, or discard a voice message before sending it.
After finishing the recording, users can select one or multiple recipients through a contact picker and send the voice message directly from the recording interface.
The widget is not intended to replace WhatsApp’s existing voice messaging workflow. Instead, it serves as an optional shortcut that users can place on their Android home screen for quicker access to voice messages.
Still unavailable for beta testing
Although the feature has been discovered in the latest WhatsApp beta build, it has not yet been enabled for beta testers, meaning users cannot try it at this time.
As with many upcoming WhatsApp features, the widget will likely undergo additional testing before eventually rolling out to the stable Android app. WABetaInfo first uncovered the feature while examining the latest beta version.
The voice message widget follows another Android home screen widget that WhatsApp has been developing, which allows users to view recent Status updates directly from the home screen without opening the app.
If released, the new shortcut could make sending voice notes significantly faster, especially for users who rely on voice messaging throughout the day.
