WhatsApp finally arrives on Apple Watch with full chat access, voice notes, emoji reactions, and media previews, bringing true messaging freedom to your wrist.
Meta’s WhatsApp has officially arrived on Apple Watch, marking the end of its previously limited capabilities on the wearable. The fully-featured app is now available to download by all users following a brief beta period through TestFlight.
Apple Watch users were previously restricted to reading and replying to notifications mirrored from their iPhones. This new official app changes that. In a report by Engadget, Meta notes that the app introduces a host of sought-after features, providing a more comprehensive chatting experience directly from the watch.
Users can now scroll through entire conversations, including long ones, without needing their iPhones. The app enables sending written messages, recording and sending voice notes, reacting with emojis, and viewing images and stickers more clearly on the watch.
Besides messaging, call notifications are now accessible, indicating who’s calling, which lets users decide swiftly whether to pick up their phone. The app also offers an extended view of chat history, overcoming limitations of earlier mirrored notifications.
Meta reassures that end-to-end encryption remains active for all communications through the Apple Watch app, maintaining user privacy and security.
Per TechRadar, the new WhatsApp app works with Apple Watch Series 4 and newer running watchOS 10 or later. Users need their iPhone nearby with the latest version of WhatsApp for proper syncing and connection.
To get the app, users can search WhatsApp in the App Store directly from their Apple Watch, or use the Watch app on their iPhone, navigate to the My Watch tab, find WhatsApp, and proceed with installation.
The launch signifies a significant advancement for WhatsApp’s utility on wearables. Although messaging apps like Telegram and Messenger already offered dedicated Apple Watch apps, WhatsApp was lagging for years. Now, Apple Watch users can finally enjoy similar interactions and convenience that Android smartwatch users have had.
Meta has hinted that additional features are on the horizon, potentially introducing standalone app support for cellular Apple Watch models, which would enhance WhatsApp’s usability on the go.
