Spotify is rolling out Running Mode for Premium subscribers on iPhone, introducing a new workout feature that creates personalized playlists based on a runner’s planned pace and training session. The feature is initially available in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia.
Available through Spotify’s Fitness hub, Running Mode allows users to build playlists around their target pace and workout type. Spotify says the feature is designed to better match music with different styles of running and training sessions.
Runners can customize every workout
After opening Running Mode from Spotify’s Fitness hub, users can either choose from 25 preset workouts or create a completely custom session.
Rather than selecting a pre-made playlist, users first choose the type of run they want to complete, such as a steady run, interval workout, or pyramid session.
They can then customize the workout by setting its duration, selecting a target pace, and choosing their preferred music genre.
Once the workout is configured, Spotify automatically generates a playlist tailored to the selected workout and running pace. Users can also enable English voice prompts for guidance during the session.
At launch, Running Mode is available only to Spotify Premium subscribers using an iPhone in the US, UK, and Australia.
Spotify is revisiting an old idea with a new approach
This isn’t Spotify’s first attempt at building features for runners.
The company previously offered a pace-based running feature before discontinuing it in 2018. Running Mode takes a different approach by replacing automatic pace detection with manual workout planning, giving users greater control over both their training session and music selection.
The new feature also aligns with Spotify’s broader push into fitness experiences.
Earlier this year, the company partnered with Peloton to bring guided fitness classes to Premium subscribers. Running Mode expands that effort by adding another workout-focused feature that helps users plan a run before the music starts.
With personalized playlists, workout customization, and integrated voice prompts, Spotify is aiming to make its app a more capable companion for fitness enthusiasts.
