Siri Is Set to Become a Full AI Chatbot This Fall

Apple is preparing one of the biggest changes to Siri since its launch. According to a new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman , the company plans to evolve Siri from a basic voice assistant into a full-fledged AI chatbot, starting later this year with upcoming software updates.

The change will roll out in stages, beginning with a major intelligence upgrade in iOS 26.4 and culminating in a completely redesigned Siri experience in iOS 27, macOS 27, and other Apple platforms.

A major intelligence upgrade arrives first

The first step comes with iOS 26.4, expected within the next two to three months. While Siri’s interface will look the same, its underlying technology will be completely replaced.

Apple will move Siri to Apple Foundation Models version 10, a system built on Google’s Gemini technology. This model reportedly uses 1.2 trillion parameters, making Siri significantly more capable than before.

With this update, Siri will gain the ability to search the web, understand what is happening on the screen, and take actions inside apps. It will also start using personal context, allowing responses to adapt based on how a user interacts with their device, rather than treating every request in isolation.

iOS 27 is where Siri becomes a chatbot

The bigger shift happens with iOS 27 and Apple’s 2027-era operating system updates. Internally, Apple refers to this version of Siri as “Campos.”

Instead of behaving like a simple listening assistant, Siri will move to a chat-style interface. Users will still activate it the same way, but interactions will feel more like a conversation. Siri will be able to answer detailed questions, search the web, generate text and images, and analyze uploaded files.

This marks Siri’s transition into the same category as modern AI chatbots, rather than a feature limited to quick commands.

Deeper control across apps and the system

One key advantage Siri will retain is deep integration with Apple’s ecosystem. The new chatbot version will understand open windows on macOS and on-screen content on iPhone and iPad.

This allows Siri to perform multi-step actions, suggest relevant commands, and work directly inside apps. It will continue to handle system-level controls such as device settings, smart home management, and everyday utilities.

Apple is also expanding Siri’s role inside its own apps, including Mail, Photos, Music, TV, Podcasts, and Xcode. This will let users issue more natural commands that involve searching, editing, or managing content without manually navigating through menus.

Privacy is still a limiting factor

Apple is reportedly being cautious about how much information Siri will be allowed to remember. While many AI chatbots store past interactions to improve responses, Apple is debating strict limits to protect user privacy.

This discussion is especially important as Apple considers whether some future cloud-based AI processing could rely on Google’s Gemini servers. For now, the Siri upgrade in iOS 26.4 will run on Apple’s own Private Cloud Compute infrastructure, powered by Apple Silicon.

Designed to evolve over time

The report also notes that Apple is building the new Siri in a modular way. This design allows Apple to swap out underlying AI models without reworking the entire assistant.

That flexibility gives Apple the option to move away from Gemini-based systems in the future, rely more heavily on its own models, or adapt Siri to meet regulatory requirements in specific regions.

If Apple delivers on these plans, Siri’s long-promised reinvention may finally arrive, turning it into a true AI assistant that can compete with modern chatbots while staying deeply tied to Apple’s devices and privacy approach.
