Nothing’s first AI-native product ships in December with no new screen

Carl Pei calls it a tool that couldn’t have been an app, but his X post skips the name, price and specs, and leaves the screen question open.

Nothing’s first “AI-native” product ships next month, which means December 2026. CEO Carl Pei says it has no new screen. In an X post titled “Toolmakers,” published on November 4, he called it “a tool” that “couldn’t have been an app.” He gave no name, price, or specs.

Pei’s wording is narrower than “screen-free”

Pei only said “no new screen,” which leaves open whether the device has a display of any kind, and whether it uses the screen on your phone. Nothing hasn’t said either way.

The teaser image shows the NOTHING (R) wordmark, a COMING SOON label, and the rounded corner of a dark object. It doesn’t show what the object does. These details are still missing:

  • The product name
  • The price
  • The specs
  • The countries where it will sell
  • Whether it needs a phone to work

Pei’s essay argues AI proves itself at work first

The post is a long essay, and much of it is about AI at work. Pei writes that consumer demand for AI is small next to demand from knowledge work. He also says the missing piece is context: “context doesn’t live in a chat box. It lives in the tools you use and carry every day.” If the device follows that argument, it is built for work. Pei hasn’t said what it does.

A product that “couldn’t have been an app” probably needs new hardware

If the product couldn’t be an app, its main job probably depends on hardware an app can’t supply. Pei hasn’t described that hardware.

In the same essay, Pei lists what the industry is chasing: “the pendant, the pin, the glasses, the companion.” He calls looking for the iPhone of AI today “a dead end.” Apple reportedly put its camera-equipped AI pendant on hold in September. That pendant is the same AirTag-sized AI pin first reported in January, and it faces the same history: the Humane AI Pin was criticized and then discontinued in 2025.

Nothing already has tens of millions of devices out

Pei says “tens of millions of our devices” are already in people’s pockets and ears. Those include earbuds such as the Ear (2), which launched in March 2023. That gives the new product a large base of existing devices to reach.

An October rumor from leaker Roland Quandt said Nothing is planning two pairs of AI smart glasses, one without cameras. Nothing hasn’t confirmed that, and nothing in Pei’s post links it to the December product.

Wait for the name and price before you plan around it

Wait for the name, the price, and a list of what the product does. The official details so far come from Pei’s post, and it names none of those three. Until Nothing shares them, there is nothing concrete to compare it with.
