Apple’s rumored MacBook Ultra may not keep its new look for long. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that an entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro planned for 2027 is expected to resemble Apple’s upcoming high-end laptops while using a standard M7 chip.
The cheaper model is reportedly code-named K104. The high-end 14-inch and 16-inch machines are known internally as K114 and K116 and may arrive between late 2026 and early 2027. If those dates hold, the premium design could spread down the lineup within roughly a year.
Apple has not announced any of these laptops, and the “MacBook Ultra” name is still rumored.
The design may spread, but OLED and touch might not
The high-end models are expected to bring an OLED touchscreen and Dynamic Island-style camera cutout, along with a thinner and lighter body. They would be Apple’s first touchscreen Macs.
Bloomberg’s roadmap only says the entry-level K104 will resemble the K114 and K116. It does not confirm that the cheaper MacBook Pro will also get OLED or touch support. Apple could reuse the overall chassis and smaller camera cutout while keeping the premium display features exclusive to its costlier models.
That distinction matters because the high-end machine is expected to cost more than the current MacBook Pro. A shared exterior would let Apple modernize the whole lineup without erasing the reason to pay extra for the top model.
Apple’s MacBook rollout could get complicated
Bloomberg says Apple first plans to refresh the entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro with an M6 chip and the current design. The M7 version with the newer look would then follow in 2027, creating an unusually short gap between updates.
The high-end K114 and K116 models may take a different route. They are expected to launch with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips despite introducing the new design, followed by M7 Pro and M7 Max versions later in 2027.
The exact branding remains unclear. Apple could place a MacBook Ultra above the MacBook Pro or use it to replace today’s high-end Pro models. Either way, Bloomberg’s roadmap suggests the design itself will not remain an Ultra-only perk.
The current MacBook Pro design is five years old
Apple last redesigned the MacBook Pro in 2021. That version became thicker and restored MagSafe, HDMI, and the SD card slot after years of relying heavily on USB-C.
The rumored redesign appears focused on making the laptop thinner and updating the display rather than rethinking the MacBook from scratch. Buyers who mainly want the new look may eventually get it on the entry-level model, while OLED and touch could remain the real Ultra upgrades.
