Apple Prepares M5 Ultra for Mac Studio and Possibly Mac Pro

Bloomberg hints that Apple intends to equip the Mac Studio with the M5 Ultra, with a possible rollout to a future Mac Pro also on the table. The M5 Ultra is set to be the premium member of the M5 chipset line, following the expected M5 Pro and M5 Max. Typically, Apple releases its Ultra chips several months after the Max version, suggesting we might wait until mid-to-late 2026 for its release.

At present, the M5 chip can already be found in the latest MacBook Pro and iPad Pro models, which hit stores earlier this year. The anticipated launch of the M5 Pro and M5 Max is early 2026, potentially gearing up the M5 Ultra for an appearance at WWDC 2026 or by fall that year.

Apple Skipped the M4 Ultra: Why That Matters

Apple’s choice to bypass developing an M4 Ultra wasn’t missed by industry professionals and heavy users alike. This year’s Mac Studio updates introduced M4 Max and M3 Ultra options, mixing chip generations and sparking confusion about which fits specific user needs best.

The lack of an M4 Ultra comes down to technical constraints. The M4 Max chip was missing the UltraFusion connector needed to pair two Max units into an Ultra configuration. As Bloomberg reports, Apple doesn’t intend to launch an Ultra variant with every chip genus, choosing instead to focus on significant advances where technology and performance benefits align.

The M5 Ultra Could Fix Apple’s Mixed Chip Lineup

Should Apple release the M5 Ultra, it might streamline its chip lineup by including all variations—base, Pro, Max, and Ultra—within a single generation. This alignment could simplify customer decisions and the overall Mac range. Expectations for the Mac Studio with M5 Ultra center on substantial internal enhancements rather than cosmetic redesigns.

What to Expect from the 2026 Mac Studio

Rumors about a dramatic redesign for the next Mac Studio remain unsubstantiated. However, Bloomberg has noted that Apple is working on two new external displays, with one potentially being unveiled alongside the M5 Ultra Mac Studio. This plan follows Apple’s pattern of launching fresh displays with Mac Studio updates.

If the M5 Ultra also makes its way into the Mac Pro, it would replace the lagging M2 Ultra, which currently powers the existing $6,999 Mac Pro. Skipping the M4 generation might help synchronize both desktop Mac lines with Apple’s silicon development roadmap.
