Meet the all-new iPhone Air: Apple’s slimmest iPhone yet with a titanium body, Pro-level performance, advanced cameras, and all-day battery life starting at $999.
Alongside the iPhone 17 lineup, Apple introduced a brand‑new model: the iPhone Air. Contrary to what many expected, it isn’t called the iPhone 17 Air, Apple dropped the number. It’s an ultra‑thin iPhone, even slimmer than the iPhone 6, with a Pro‑level processor and a price just under the Pro series. The idea is to mix Pro performance with a design‑first approach. If you’re wondering what it is, why it exists, and whether it’s worth your money, here’s the full story.

The iPhone Air’s headline feature is its body. At just 5.64mm thin, it beats even the iPhone 6’s record. Apple crafted it from grade‑5 titanium with a high‑gloss finish and added a new plateau design on the back to house the cameras, speaker, and silicon, freeing up space for the battery. At only 165 grams, it feels impossibly light yet stronger than any previous iPhone thanks to Ceramic Shield 2 covering both front and back.
Apple even redesigned the USB‑C port, making it thinner with 3D‑printed titanium. This is also the first iPhone where the back is Ceramic Shield, making cracks and scratches far less likely.
The thin frame doesn’t sacrifice usability, there’s still the Action button and a new Camera Control shortcut, both carried over from Pro models.
The Air gets a 6.5‑inch Super Retina XDR OLED screen that sits right between the base iPhone 17 (6.3‑inch) and iPhone 17 Plus (6.7‑inch). It supports ProMotion 120Hz, adaptive from 1Hz to 120Hz, so scrolling feels smooth and the Always‑On display barely sips power. With 3,000 nits peak brightness and 2× outdoor contrast, this is the most sunlight‑friendly iPhone screen yet.
Under the hood, the iPhone Air runs the A19 Pro chip, the same powerhouse as the iPhone 17 Pro models. It features a 6‑core CPU, 5‑core GPU, and GPU‑level Neural Accelerators that deliver 3× the AI compute of the previous generation. Whether it’s gaming, multitasking, or running Apple Intelligence on‑device, the Air handles it with ease.
Supporting the A19 Pro are two other Apple‑designed chips: the N1 wireless chip (Wi‑Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, Thread) and the C1X modem, which is faster and 30% more efficient than the one in iPhone 16 Pro. This makes hotspotting, AirDrop, and global connectivity smoother than ever. And like the iPhone 17 lineup, the Air is eSIM‑only, with support for 500+ carriers worldwide.
Apple describes the iPhone Air’s 48MP Fusion Main camera as giving you the “equivalent of four lenses.” It supports popular 28mm and 35mm focal lengths, plus an optical‑quality 2× Telephoto crop. Low‑light shots benefit from the improved Photonic Engine, and Focus Control allows you to adjust depth later in Photos, just like multicamera systems.
The 18MP Center Stage selfie camera is Apple’s first square sensor, letting you shoot in landscape orientation without flipping the phone. It automatically expands for group selfies and keeps you centered on video calls. With Dual Capture, you can record with both front and back cameras at the same time, perfect for reaction videos.
Here’s a quick look at the camera hardware in table form:
Camera | Specs |
---|---|
Rear Camera | 48MP Fusion Main, 28mm & 35mm focal lengths, 2× Telephoto crop, Photonic Engine, Focus Control |
Front Camera | 18MP Center Stage, square sensor, auto orientation, group expansion, 4K HDR stabilization |
Video capabilities include 4K60 Dolby Vision, Action mode, and Spatial Audio recording with wind noise reduction and Audio Mix editing tools.
Battery was a major concern going into launch, but Apple seems to have pulled it off. The iPhone Air offers up to 27 hours of video playback, slightly less than the Pro models but still a full day of use. Inside, the redesigned architecture maximizes battery space, and iOS 26’s Adaptive Power Mode learns your usage to stretch power intelligently when needed.
Fast charging is supported via Apple’s new 40W Dynamic Power Adapter, giving 50% charge in about 20 minutes. The Air also works with the new Qi2 MagSafe chargers for quicker, more efficient wireless charging.
The iPhone Air launches in four finishes:
Apple also introduced matching accessories: ultra‑thin MagSafe Cases, lightweight Bumpers, a Crossbody Strap in 10 colors, and a MagSafe Battery Pack that extends usage up to 40 hours of video playback.
The iPhone Air starts at $999 for 256GB, with higher tiers at $1,199 for 512GB and $1,399 for 1TB. Pre‑orders open September 12 at 5 a.m. PT, with availability in 63+ countries from September 19, and more regions following on September 26.
Apple didn’t just make another iPhone, it carved out a new category. The iPhone Air is for those who want Pro performance in a body that feels futuristic. It’s thinner than any iPhone before, lighter in hand, but doesn’t compromise on power, cameras, or durability.
If you’ve always wanted the speed of a Pro but couldn’t justify the size or price, the iPhone Air might be the sweet spot. At $999, it sits right between the base iPhone 17 and the 17 Pro, and for many, it could be the most exciting iPhone of 2025.
