The iPhone 17 Pro Max hits 36W charging speeds, cutting charge time to just 20 minutes for 50% battery. Here’s everything you need to know.
The iPhone 17 Pro Max is proving to be a major step forward in Apple’s charging capabilities, setting new records as the fastest-charging iPhone in their lineup. Independent tests by [ChargerLAB] confirmed the device can achieve a peak speed of up to 36W, demonstrating a notable jump from the iPhone 16 Pro Max’s maximum of 30W when using Apple’s more robust USB-C power adapters.
ChargerLAB conducted tests on the iPhone 17 Pro Max using a variety of Apple chargers, ranging from the basic 18W adapter to the hefty 140W MacBook power adapter. The most effective performance was seen with several mid- to high-range adapters, including the new 40W Dynamic Power Adapter, as well as the 61W, 67W, 70W, 96W, and 140W USB-C adapters. Each of these allowed the iPhone to hit the new top charging speed of 36W.
This advancement, though it may seem incremental, translates to a 20% improvement over previous models. Practically, this means an iPhone 17, 17 Pro, or 17 Pro Max can reach 50% charge in mere 20 minutes using a compatible charger. For context, the iPhone 16 lineup required about 30 minutes to achieve the same level.
Apple’s MagSafe wireless charger has also seen a boost, reaching up to 32W charging speeds. This enhancement puts it ahead of many wired setups from past years. Yet, for those seeking the fastest charge, a direct connection with a 40W or stronger USB-C adapter is still the most efficient option.
The new 40W Dynamic Power Adapter, which boasts a 60W maximum output, is available in select markets, including the U.S., Canada, China, Japan, Mexico, Taiwan, and the Philippines. However, achieving these enhanced speeds requires the correct gear, specifically a USB-C cable that supports high power delivery. Fortunately, the iPhone 17 includes a suitable USB-C cable in its package.
While some Android models offer even faster charging capabilities, Apple’s incremental improvements are beginning to show significant benefits. The ability to charge from 0 to 50% in just 20 minutes can substantially affect day-to-day use, ideal for quick charges before heading out or during a short break. The iPhone 17 Pro Max emerges as Apple’s swiftest-charging phone to date, indicating the company’s growing commitment to enhancing charging speeds.
