A new leak suggests Apple may shrink the Dynamic Island on the iPhone 17 Pro models by 25%, giving the cutout its first redesign since 2022. The standard iPhone 17 models are expected to keep the larger version.
Apple may finally be changing the look of the Dynamic Island, at least on its higher-end iPhones. A new leak suggests the cutout at the top of the screen is shrinking on the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, marking the first big visual tweak to the feature since its debut in 2022.
The leak comes from an account called @that_one_g3 on X, who claims to work at a company producing iPhone screen protectors. According to images they shared, the Dynamic Island on the iPhone 17 Pro models measures about 1.5 centimeters wide. That’s roughly a 25% reduction compared to the 2cm width on current iPhone 16 models. The standard iPhone 17 and the new iPhone 17 Air, meanwhile, are said to stick with the same larger cutout.
Last-minute leaks like this aren’t unusual as accessory makers often start preparing designs just before launch. Still, the source has no proven track record, which means it should be taken with caution. Even so, this rumor aligns with months of chatter that Apple has been exploring ways to shrink the Dynamic Island.
Analyst Jeff Pu earlier suggested only the Pro Max might see a smaller cutout. Another leaker mentioned Apple’s use of “metalens” technology to reduce the size of Face ID sensors. Yet, others, including well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said the Dynamic Island would remain largely unchanged this year, with any shrink coming later in the iPhone 18 lineup. This back-and-forth has left expectations uncertain.
If true, the change would give the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max a more streamlined look compared to the regular iPhone 17 models. It also fits Apple’s recent strategy of separating Pro models not only with better cameras and displays but also with distinct design choices. Some leakers even suggest the Dynamic Island’s software interface might get a refresh in iOS 26 to complement the new design, though no details have been shared yet.
Apple’s “Awe dropping” event is set for September 9, where the company will officially reveal the iPhone 17 lineup alongside iOS 26. If the Dynamic Island does shrink this year, it’ll be the first visual update since the feature’s introduction on the iPhone 14 Pro three years ago. Until then, this remains a rumor, but one that feels more plausible with each passing leak.
