Battery capacities for the iPhone 17 lineup have surfaced in new leaks. The Pro Max is set to cross 5,000 mAh for the first time, while the Air balances a slimmer design with efficiency upgrades.
Just days before Apple’s big September event, a new leak has surfaced that claims to reveal the battery capacities for the upcoming iPhone 17 lineup. The numbers come from a Chinese regulatory database and were first shared online by the reliable leaker ShrimpApplePro. If accurate, these listings show meaningful gains for most models and one major milestone for the Pro Max.
According to the filings, the standard iPhone 17 will feature a 3,692 mAh battery, a modest improvement over its predecessor. The much-rumored iPhone 17 Air, Apple’s new ultra-thin model, is said to pack a 3,036 mAh battery with a SIM tray, while the eSIM-only version climbs slightly to 3,149 mAh. This lower capacity was expected due to its slim design, but Apple is reportedly preparing a new power-efficient modem and even a battery case to balance things out.
For the higher-end models, the numbers are more exciting. The iPhone 17 Pro is listed with 3,988 mAh for SIM models and a healthier 4,252 mAh for eSIM-only units. That’s up to an 18% boost compared to the iPhone 16 Pro. The biggest upgrade is saved for the iPhone 17 Pro Max, which reportedly comes with 4,823 mAh (SIM) or 5,088 mAh (eSIM). If true, this makes it the first iPhone ever to cross the 5,000 mAh mark, an almost 8% increase over last year’s model.
Here’s a quick look at all the leaked capacities in a table:
Model | With SIM Tray | eSIM Only |
---|---|---|
iPhone 17 | 3,692 mAh | – |
iPhone 17 Air | 3,036 mAh | 3,149 mAh |
iPhone 17 Pro | 3,988 mAh | 4,252 mAh |
iPhone 17 Pro Max | 4,823 mAh | 5,088 mAh |
The difference in battery sizes between models comes down to Apple’s push toward eSIM. Removing the physical SIM card tray frees up extra internal space, which Apple is finally putting to use by slightly increasing battery capacity. According to the leak, eSIM-only models could offer 3–6% more capacity than their SIM-equipped counterparts. Apple has already sold eSIM-only iPhones in the U.S. for years, and now it looks like more regions will be joining that shift.
If these leaks hold true, Apple is clearly prioritizing battery life in this year’s lineup. The iPhone 17 Pro Max could deliver the best endurance ever in an iPhone, while the Pro also sees a meaningful jump. The Air, despite its smaller cell, will lean on efficiency improvements to balance performance. And with Apple now required to display energy labels in the EU, we may see official capacities published soon after launch.
For now, we’ll have to wait until Apple’s September 9 event to see if these numbers are confirmed. But if accurate, iPhone users may finally get the battery gains they’ve been asking for.
