Apple appears ready to let one phone number move between two iPhones in iOS 27. Its beta iPhone quick switch documentation describes active and passive devices for the same number, while a MacRumors forum demo shows the setup screens for a feature called “iPhone Handoff.”
This could be useful if you want to keep a newer iPhone as your main device and use an older one for travel, exercise, or situations where you do not want to carry your everyday phone. It is still a beta feature, and carrier support will decide when you can use it.
How iPhone Handoff is supposed to work
The setup appears under Settings > Cellular. You choose a main iPhone and a companion iPhone, then transfer a companion eSIM to the second device. The main iPhone keeps the primary eSIM and remains the place where cellular settings are managed.
The eSIM transfer process is familiar, but the result is different. Instead of permanently moving your line to a new phone, iPhone Handoff lets the active phone change between two enrolled iPhones.
The demo suggests that unlocking one of the phones makes it the active device for the number. iOS may show a Dynamic Island notification when the service moves. Location sharing also follows the iPhone that is currently using the number.
Apple’s developer documentation uses the terms active and passive rather than promising that both phones stay fully connected at the same time. Apps can receive a notification when the state changes, which gives developers a way to move app data or credentials to the phone you are using.
This is different from regular Handoff
Apple already uses Handoff to move activities such as a Safari page or a document from one device to another. The new iPhone Handoff feature deals with cellular service. It changes which iPhone carries your phone number, so the two features should not be confused.
Carrier support is the biggest question
You will need two iPhones running iOS 27, but that will not be enough on its own. The forum demo says carrier support is required and points to T-Mobile in the United States and Telekom.de in Germany as early examples. It also says T-Mobile’s enrollment server had the feature disabled during testing.
That means an iOS 27 beta installation does not guarantee that the option will appear in Settings. Apple has not published a final carrier list or confirmed when enrollment will open for the public.
iPhone Handoff is coming with iOS 27
iOS 27 is still in beta and is expected to launch in September 2026. Apple first mentioned the capability at WWDC, but the beta demo provides the clearest look at how it may work. The feature name, carrier requirements, and setup flow could still change before the final release.
